Can OnStar be added to an Avalanche that didn't come with it? Has anyone done this? :cautious:

Thanks...

I think it might be...but not 100% sure of it though.

I dont see why it couldnt be added.

But hey what do i know...lol

According to my local salesman, it absolutely cannot be added on. ?It has been posed before but Chevrolet won't let them do it. ?Not sure what the complete issue is. ?Is this different in any other areas?

A quick call to your local dealership will confirm this.

Just confirmed with ONSTAR, you cannot add it on. It must come factory equipped. Sorry.

Goint thru OLD threads searching for some TSB stuff.
I have to argue this thread as I HAVE seen AN AVALANCHE with after factory On_star added.
A gentleman with a standard Avalanche I met at Costco in Avon Ohio last week.
I was locked out of my AV- Waiting on tyhe police to let me in.
I have a Z-66 W/O OS.
SO, we are talking and he is like you should have bought that onstar stuf.
I said I wanted to have it added but it is NOT available unles is is a factory option.
WELL-
He cracked open his hood and lo and behond a antennea of sorts and some module.
HE STATED the Merrick Chevy in Cleveland Ohio installed it after the fact at the dealership.
I saw the onstar controls on his rear view mirror?

Whats up with this?
Anyone else out here get it After the fact.
Is a a more limited scaled down version of onstar.
His AV, saw the build date according to him was the FIRST Avalanche sold in NE Ohio?
BS or not- I saw aftermarket onstar AND the anntenaea was NOT on the roof?

Any insight folks.
I may add this

Well, I don't think anyone said it was "impossible", however it is very improbable.

If the antenna was mounted underneath the hood, GPS would not work. Period. Cellular performance would work, however it would be somewhat compromised for sure. I would question the life expectancy of the module located in the engine compartment. There is nothing in the ADV plan (validation/testing) to compensate for being installed in an ambient environment. No seals on the casing.......not weatherproof connectors.....etc, etc....

I would imagine that one could order the old model rear-view mirror that includes buttons and microphone, however the handsfree and voice rec performance would be attrocious....especially on a 03 Bose equipped vehicle.

Additionally, the OnStar call center is provided a list of every vehicle that is built with OnStar......they know the vehicle information at the first keypress as the VIN is tied to the MIN and STID. I can't imagine what it would take to get a rogue vehicle through, although I am sure it would not be impossible.....after all, they are hoping to make $$$ off of folks when they chose to subscribe after a year.....

My two cents worth....

Just get this addon, screw paying Onstar the money. They want too much...I'm thinking of putting it on my 2003. I got every option except onstar.

All I know is that OnStar used to be a dealer-installed option, but then there was a cutoff date when dealerships were not allowed to install it anymore.
