This is a great forum (but I'm not sure where owners-to-be should post - maybe you need an "ordering your Av" forum!).

I have what is perhaps the dumbest question. Because of the pitiful amount of info provided by GM in their Av brochure, I am unclear about the type of system them offer in the 4x4 Av. Is it full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) or is it 2WD with 4WD only when the terrain is slippery?

Thanks for your help!

Gonna order: 2003 2500 4x4 with 8.1L, 4.10 gears - will be lifting it 6" (RCD suspension lift) and other mods.

If you've got any suggestions before I order I'd be VERY happy to get them from you!

Just a pic I like:

The system on the Avalanche is a part time 4 wheel drive system. It has an autotrac setting but all this does is automatically engage the center differential when it senses tire slip. Unlike an AWD system, you can't run in 4wheel drive on dry pavement. Anyone please correct me if i'm wrong.

The 4X4 Av's have separate settings for 4 Lo, 4 Hi, 2 Hi, and AutoTrac, which runs in 2 wheel drive until the need for 4 wheel drive is sensed.

EarthQuake is right. Keep in mind that the Z71 package is also a 4x4 package. Just want to be sure you are aware of this. The settings are Auto 4wd, 2hi, 4hi and 4lo. Auto 4wd and 2hi can be engaged at any time and at any speed and road condition. Auto will cause a slight loss in mileage. 4hi is for warranted conditions only and should never be used on any wet or dry paved surface especially above 55MPH. 4lo is impressive. You must be in neutral to engage this gear. Once engaged, select your running gear of choice and prepare to haev your head buried in the headrest if you give to much throttle. Great for high torque applications, like when you are stuck or towing/pulling something else that is stuck!

Magic listen to arthquake and Jamie they are both correct. let me tell you though 4Lo is the heavy stuff bro.

Magic, I just wanted to let you know, that if the rear decals are indeed correct on the pic you submitted, the Z66 AV is a 2WD model.

Just trying to be helpful. :)

Mr Dan! How are you? Thought you got rid of me on Pete's Boxster Board or the Babbler's board uh? ;D

You getting rid of the Boxster for the AV?

Send me a PM and we can chat. I've had my AV for a couple of months now and love it.

Talk to you soon!

carrerarod (a.k.a. boxsterrod, supercharged-rod) ;D

Hey all, thanks for your feedback! I do appreciate it.

I know the pic I posted is a Z66 (2WD) and the Z71 is a 1500 4x4. The pic I posted is cool because the Av is lifted and I kinda like that

Hey Rod, it's very cool to run into you here! I'm used to seeing you on the Boxster boards. I sent you an e-mail and I hope to talk to you soon.

I'm off to order my 2003 Av!
