Newbie here. Been readin' this group avidly for a couple of weeks, and I can't believe the helpfulness of all you folks. A big thank you!

I've been looking at/for Z66s, used and new. Had my eye on one in Aurora MO, at a great price. Bit the bullet and spent $20 on CarFax and found out that it had been bought back under the lemon law in California...wholesaled to MO, and tempting me with big pewter eyes. WOW! Did I learn a lesson.

Is it accepted practice to ask the dealer to show you the CarFax on used vehicles as a matter of course? It would save a guy $$$.

The quest continues.

Welcome to the club and goodluck on your quest. You did the right thing....always buy with your head and not your heart. You probably saved yourself a heck of a lot of grief. (y) (y)

Hey Z66 Wannabe,

I'm glad to hear that you were saved by CarFax. What I noticed was the location of where you looked at that Av. My wife is from Purdy, MO and we are often in those parts. We live in Indiana but will be moving to NW Arkansas in a couple of weeks. Anyway, I wish you luck in getting your Av and maybe someday I'll meet you with your new Av at a GTG! There's a few of us around the SW Missouri area.

This makes me wonder - if someone here totals, burns, floods, or returns on a Lemon Law I wonder if we should create a thread where you could put the V.I.N. for do not buy my Avalanche and why...

Thanks mcrendog. You're driving what I want. Pretty soon now.

I guess lemon Avy's haven't been an issue too much, what with 2002 being only a little while ago. But as the machine ages, it might be nice to have a continuing "don't buy this car" thread.

I guess the CarFax stuff is public information, isn't it? We pay for it, and lemon law buybacks should be FOI stuff.

that's not a bad idea.

Mine may have to be put there if they don't fix the fr*ken mirror position memory.

Hey, where are you at, Z66 Wannabe? I see it says Springfield but are you actually the Springfield area?

I also was saved by carfax ;D. I was dealing withy a private party had a 02 avalanche for sale almost fully loaded for 20,000.00. sounded like a great deal. I took the truck on a test drive got the vin# and did a Carfax report. Carfax said this was a Canadian truck. The milage was 12,000 took vin # to dealer to have them run there own report they gave me a report witch it went in for service with 37,000klms. So i found out not only it was a canadian AV but the dash was changed out as well. to make it look like a good deal. Few months later bought a 04 DRM.

Welcome to the site.
I hope you find what you are looking for on the market.

I always wondered where Carfax obtained their information from and if it was worth the fee. I ran a friends VIN on carfax one day. Thanks to a post on this site, we had a free report.
His car has been involved in some pretty good accidents and the frame is still out of alignment a bit. The car has been in and out of multiple reputable repair shops and the dealers too. Nothing about the vehicle on Carfax. It received flying colors.

Yeah my truck was in an accident in July and I ran it through a few weeks ago and it was clean. The body shop guy told me that Indiana does not consider any diminished value in auto body repair and does not keep a database of major repairs. He didn't think it would show up on CarFax and so far it hasn't.

If I was to buy a used vehilcle I would use Carfax, but I wouldn't rely solely on it. If it came up with a clean record, I would still have the vehicle checked out by a mechanic.
