Since height is a concern for me, I was wondering if anyone has ever thought about mounting a cargo rack directly to the hard cover? I'm in need of more cargo room and cannot afford a snugtop yet. So I'm just trying to come up with less expensive ideas to possibly try.

Many threadfs on this...and many ideas....yakima towers, TXAVY rack etc etc...

Check down a bit and look for them threads....

The link by nyavalanche is a good one for a start

Enjoy

Tator,

Do a search for "Yakima Q Towers" and you find numerous threads detailing the use of the Yakima system. I've got it on mine and couldn't be happier. Here?s one of those thread that details the cost of the system. http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php?board=119;action=display;threadid=15302;start=0

Before I did this I permanently mounted the Yakima Tracks on the roof of my AV in lieu of the OEM racks. While I like it better than the OEM I rarely use it anymore now that I?ve got the Q Towers on the bed panels. It?s just too big of a pain the get the bikes on and off the top of such a high vehicle.

If you?re planning on only carrying bikes you might also want to check out the ?Sportworks TranSport Series racks feature our secure and convenient Ratcheting Quick-Load system (RQL). Carry up to 4 bikes with a 2" hitch. This rack folds up for storage and down from the vehicle to gain rear access while loaded with bikes.? It?s very convenient to be able to simply drop the bikes in the trays and ratchet it down without having to take off the front wheel. Here's a link, http://www.sportworks.com/sttra.asp

Thanks everyone,

I missed TXAVy's product because I thought i was a bike rack only.

Since I'm in need of caring all of my hunting stuff + family and dog, I bet I'd be at or near 200+ lbs in the rack and if you read my x-mas tree post. I don't need to leave anything behind me where someone else could hit it. ;D

FWIW, I wouldn't personally put 200 lbs. of stuff on any rack attached only to the cargo panels. Therefore, I am reinforcing my above recommendation as a great and versatile solution.

Good luck with the search :)

Heyas,

Just got a nod about this post and thought I'd come look. Lots of great ideas and options. Only thing I'd add is that if you've gone to the TXAVy Bed Rack post and had problems replying (error - you're not allowed to access this section), it's because the link changed when it was put in the sub-sectin "Exterior Misc Mods". Here's the new link that you can reply on successfully.

Here's a couple pictures with my rack carrying Safari Basket type setups since it sounds like that's what you're looking for. Let me know if there's any questions I can answer for you.

Here's Cadboy1 with TWO Surco racks (like what you see on H2s). One onf the roof and one on the bed.

And if you'd prefer enclosed cargo, here's Rewbob's rig outfitted with a cargo clamshell type carrier.
