Check Engine Light continues to go on after being reset.

Has anyone had this problem:  I take my truck to my mechanic.  He says I have what's called a knock sensor kicking the check engine light on.  Well, I have had it reset three times and it continues to go off.  I hear no knocking, and the truck continues to ride well.  No loss of power, just that annoying light goes on.  Could it be the beginning of something more serious?  My AV is an '04, Z71.

Thanks.

Resetting the light doesn't cure the problem.

The code needs to be identified and the appropriate resolution made.

I agree with you one hundred percent.  But, apparantly, the dump a** mechanic I took it to seems to think there is no resolution, other then continue to reset it.  I've done a few searches on the knock sensor, and found it may just need to be replaced.  At the present time, I'm inquiring about adding an extended warranty, and finding a new mechanic to take care of the problem.

Thanks for the advice.

Was this code being tripped prior to the headers?  The headers will possibly trigger it as they are increasing noise.

Yes, the knock sensor was going off before I even replaced the headers.  I have a flowmaster muffler, and it was already a bit louder.  I've had the flowmaster on there for the past six months with no problems.  I replaced the headers with JBA's because the original exhaust header had cracked.  The sensor was on before the replacement headers went in.  Had the mechanic look at it and he reset the codes.  My understanding is the sensors can go bad sometimes, and need replacing.

Is you Av over 36k miles? ... if so, you can forget the extended Ware. from GM ... if not and it is not 3 years old ... talk to Avalanche Fox about getting a GM warr. or go to gmoutlet.com ..... that is where I got my factory warr ....

Take your truck to Autozone and have them read the code .... get the code # and the description .... if it is not descriptive enough then go to any GM dealer and they should be able to give you more information as to what is the code means .....

Apparantly, my truck is now fixed.  It seems the knock sensors were submerged under water due to my stupidity of hoseing down my motor because it was full of mud.  Once the knock sensors were replaced, my trucks power returned, and of course all the water removed from the well where the knock sensors sit seems to have helped also.  Never knew that you could drown knock sensors, but you can...........

Just glad my turck is running good again.  Thanks for all the help and suggestions folks.
