Clearcoat problem on hood

I have a spot on the hood the size of a coffee cup where the clearcoat has come off and the white flakey stuff around it. Thought I could live with that or get it fixed somehow.

Now I noticed 3-4 small spots that are black looking where it seems could be the beginning of more clearcoat problems.

I used the Mother's clay bar system on the hood and it really didnt seem to need it. But these black spots did not come out. Thought they were just bug stuff or tree sap but these seem to be in the clearcoat/paint.

Anyone else experienced this?
Does the 3 year warranty cover clearcoat issues?
Thanks for any help.

If clearcoat is failed... the whole panel needs to be sanded and re cleared..

see this site for pics of clear failure so you can help identify...

I bellieve so,Return it your dealer to have the hood repainted. Have tech do search for the problem. The same thing happen to me and the dealership repainted my hood. by the way have your claddind retreat and the same time if needed -no charged

Thanks. The large spot is down to the basecoat.

Its gonna be strange to go back to the dealer again.
Just had the brain replaced in my Aztek.
Then the very next day was back with the AV with an AC issue and a Gatorback appointment made.

Now this.
Well only 2 weeks left of the original factory warranty.
And since its gonna be in the body shop anyway...
If they give me a hard time I will keep trying.

There should be no issue in warranty coverage.

Had the same problem with my 05.
They covered it under warranty......
Re-did the whole hood.......sanded it down and repainted and cleared......

Later........

They said they would try to get it approved while its being gatorbacked.
But neither of the body shop people said they have ever seen a clearcoat issue on the Av. And that it would be tough to get approved. They seem to think that a "lot lizard" cleared some of the hood and this is the outcome of a spot fix.

I dunno.
This is my regular Chevy service dealer not where I bought.
I thought this could be a warranty issue.
They said If it does not get approved to take it back where I bought it (a GM dealer) and have them fix it.
I dont have service done where I bought cause I have had issues with them.
Had it for 3 weeks so far.
Guess we will see how it pans out.
Otherwise they want 400-500 for a repaint of hood.

That, without a doubt, is clearcoat delamination.

Looks like you had a stone chip in there?

I know they love it when they can see that then warranty is not used, because of  that little chip.....

Mine also came this way tiny chip, went through car wash. Pressure from the high pressure water hit the chip in the wrong spot and clear coat gone just like that...
But I know my dealer body shop guys well.....and they filled in the chip, took a picture and sent it to head office and it can back for approval in 10 mins.
Hopefully you can also find body shop as forgiving....
Good luck.....

Later........

You are right, they said thats a stone chip in the lower left. Then accused me of pressure washing it.

Tell you the truth I still have not washed it since I had it 3 weeks.
I did hand wash the hood and clay bar it.
There are also some black spots where the clear is beginning to lift. They said thats from bird droppings eating through the paint.

Anyway it would be nice to get it fixed regardless.

How can you protect it? With a bug deflector, bra?

Bra will make it worse.....Bug deflector will help from future damage to the hood....

Best to cover the spot with women's clear nail polish or sealer or whatever they call it, I did that on a few spots that minor chips on the front and it worked well just have to re-apply about every month or so.......I did every month because I wash my truck 4 times a week......you might be able to make it last longer if you do not wash you truck as often....

Good luck....

Later......

I did finally wash it last weekend.
The painted hood and Gatorblack got done today.
It looked good at the dealer then it rained on the way home.

I was told not to wax the hood for 3 months!
Guess that counts for the Zaino I just got too?
Wipe on and walk away, guess that counts as a wax.

Thought with all the trucks around here it would be easy to find a Lund Interceptor bug deflector. Will try another truck shop otherwise I will have to get whatever is at the local parts place(bugflector2).
Need to get it protected quick.

The reason you don't want to wax fresh paint is that solvents ared still working their way out, and wax will trap them which can lead to blistering.  3 months is a touch on the excessive side.

You can GLAZE or POLISH, just not WAX.  It's a very important distinction between the types of products.

And I want some of that rain!
