I raise my hand...and yes I have a question.  I while back I read a thread about a light clunking sound when turning.  I can somewhat feel it in the steaing wheel and it's not really loud or causing any problems (right now) but I am a little curious about it.  Anybody know where this thread is or what this sound is.  I still have a factory waranty on my Avalanche and would want to get it checked out by the dealer.  Thanks everybody!!

Search intermediate steering shaft. ?There is a new replacement shaft out that some here have said they got installed and corrected the problem.

Yep, take it back to the dealer.  My 2002 did the same thing.  Since you're still warranted, they will fix it.

thats crazy, I am having the same problem with my O5. Let me know what you find out????
IS the new shaft expesive? Of course I m not covered in my warrenty? And I would feel real ghetto fab if I throw 24s on there before I get this problem fixed!!
Let me know

Clunk and ya feel it in the wheel???, a nice soft clunk that kinda chuckles??, if yes its a shaft..

I just talked to the service department about the Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft (I-Shaft) and it was nothing new to him.  He said he has already changed out more than a couple.  I mentioned the "new" shaft that I read about on here and he said that he would get it ordered and would call me when it gets in.  Damn this site is good!!  Mine will be under warrenty (thank God) but I will inquire on parts and labor for everybody else.  I'll let ya know when it happens!

That was quick!  I called the Chevy dealer on Monday, the "I Shaft" came in on Tuesday and I got it fixed today (Wednesday)  Took em 30 minutes to change it out and since it was under warrenty it cost nothing!  The shaft would have been $92.00 and the labor would have been $65.00.  The clunking is no more and the steering feels tighter.  :D

Mine is way out of warranty...Dealer sold to me for $75. I installed myself in 20 minutes..Absolutely perfect. Never was this good and I'm now at 130K+ miles.

WoW!

What dealer did you go to? Frank Parra??
I need to replace my shaft as well.

Has GM figured this out and put the right part in the 07 trucks?

My 02 had the "clunk" 3x.  The dealership filled the sleeve with grease 2x before I found out about it being the intermediate steering shaft.  $80 to fill the sleeve with grease.  The last "clunk", I'd printed out  several articles on the issue.  They replaced the part for free.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Here is an update on the intermediate steering shaft.  I took my in to my local GM dealer here in Northern Cali.  Told them about the steering shaft problem, and they were really cool.  I am about 10k over my Warrenty and they replaced the it for free.  The service manager said they have been having such a big problem with these shafts, that it was no problem.  Walked away with no more clunk and didn't drop a penny.
So if you have the problem with your truck, take it in and they should fix it under no cost.

They lubed my ISS the first time this happened. This weekend, they replaced it with the new ISS and I still get the clunking noise at slow speed turns.
