Concept Avalanche

I don't know about you guys, but the concept Av that Chevy advertised is what made me fall in love. Does anyone know what size tires and wheels it's sitting on? What kind of wheels? Any specifics? ???

So that's where the funky looking roof rack came from on my Jada 1:24 model...... ;D

The wheels are sweet!

Gabe, I have one of the auto show press kits that featured the pre-production concept vehicle. Besides the rack style, off-road accessory lights and billet fuel door not making it into regular production, neither did the special wheels and tires. The wheels are 18" and the tires were one-off customs made for the concept Av, according to the materials from GM that I have. The wheels appear to be very similar to the current Z-71 offerings, only polished.

Gabe, welcome aboard! Great minds do think alike:

The show Avy had 18" wheels on it, as reported by a number of early articles. this info got me excited about putting 18" wheels (but not low profile) on my avy, since I had the 16" stock jobs and was going to change that. I even wrote to Chevy Tech asking if a truck appropriate 18" wheel would fit given the size of the show truck's wheels, but they are so utterly useless all I got was canned reply saying do not do anything different from stock.

more than a few of us got kooked on the Av's look by the concept Av - we even kicked this tire topic around on another thread (the one I puled the quote from) called, interestingly enough, The Concept Avalanche. Someone chimed in that the concept Av had custom made 18" rubber on it (not unusual for a concept vehicle). Fact is, you can get 18" rubber on the Av, but you need to start going with a lower profile to keep the OD around 32.5 and the section width around 11" or you start rubbing

Gabe, I have dug out some of my literature on the concept vehicle. Some other concept vehicle features are;

Dual exhaust with polished tips
Metal diamond plate on rear step
Rear tow hooks (stainless or plated)
Front tow hooks appear to be plated or stainless
Internal gutters in bed are narrower
Onstar antenna is at rear of hood and is centered left to right
"Avalanche" labeling on cladding is silver
Bed covers are different
Door handles are chrome ala the EXT
Additional small air damn under front bumper
Wheel size = 18"x9"

There is probably more. These differences were spotted from the photos (with the exception of the wheel size) . I also have some transparencies that I will try to scan and post in the future.

As for the tires I do recall reading in an article about the AV before it was released that they were custom cut (hence the radical appearance) but that they would probably not make it to the production model. They are sassy looking, but are they functional?

As i reported in march the concept Avalanche is due to go to the crusher at the end of the year unless some place can be found to store it with other concept cars and trucks it was offered to several museums and car collections but all refused as the LAWYERS came up with a bunch of restrictions on the use of the truck, the wheels on the truck were machined from alum as one piece and cost 12,500 bucks each (this was direct from gm)

Anyone know how we can get the that Billet Gas cap cover? That would be sweet on my black AV.

Flyn, you can get one from Al at al@answermart.com. He is also "alisinchains" on ebay where he auctions them off. If you buy it from him direct as a CAFC member it is $110+$10 shipping. It is very nicely machined and they look great in person, too.

Anyone got any pics of Al's work?

Sure do Flynhigh. Click on my picturetrail link below. You will find some close-up shots of one installed on my truck. They are in the "Avalanche" album.

Thx Steelhead,

Looks good, and so does your AV!

I might have to check into getting one of those in around a month....

While discussing polished wheels on the Avalanche:

I remember a previous thread where people were discussing the possibility of chroming the stock wheels on the Avalanche. While visiting Paso Robles, CA last week, I stopped at the GM dealership to purchase a hat. (I forgot to bring my own Avalanche hat, and needed a new one.) On the lot they had several Avalanches, some of which had billet fuel doors, billet grill covers, and chromed factory wheels. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera with me at the time and could not take any photographs. It did look very sweet though, but the prices on their own printed up options sheet were steep: $300 for the billet grill and $800 for the chromed wheels. I am unsure of what it costs to chrome wheels, but if they are overcharging as much for that as they are for the billet grill..

Also, while at the dealership, I was able to experiment with a Cadillac CTS. (I am in love with this car; it is what I was considering before I purchased the Avalanche. When reality kicked in though and I realized I needed to pull a horse trailer, the Avalanche became my only option, from the vehicles I liked.) It is a wonderful car, and certainly one I hope to eventually purchase as a secondary vehicle. And while speaking of Cadillac, they also had the Cadillac Escalade EXT with the rear spoiler that is mounted over the high mount brake light that others mentioned in another thread. It didn't look too shabby. In the pictures, it looked like overkill, but in person, quite nice.

I guess that is about it. Just a Canadian's vehicle-related adventures in Southern California. :)

I would be willing to take it for MY automotive museum. I will gleefully accept any usage terms that GM wishes to impose! ?;D >:D ;D

I'm a car/truck addict. There's that word again. No matter where I'm living at the time, I travel to the Dallas Auto Show every year to check out the concept vehicles as well as the new and improved production vehicles. I was driving an STS, an impressive car itself, when I saw the concept Avalanche at the 2000 show. I knew then I wanted this monster of a truck.
Like many of you, I have noticed that many of the features and accessories on these concept vehicles don't make it into production. The "silver lining" of this cloud is it gives us an excuse, not that we ever really need one, to MOD our vehicle. We can try to copy the concept or change it by adding things the engineers obviously forgot; steering wheel audio controls, amber DRLs, purple neon lighting, ect. If we could purchase a vehicle produced EXACTLY as we would like it, there would be no reason to MOD. What would we do with all that extra time on our hands?
Chief, any way to get GM to donate the concept vehicle to the CAFCNA. Seems like a natural. Perhaps Jackalanche could help with the legal issues. Doesn't hurt to dream a little.
