I have been reading some of the postings pertaining to XM Radio, but they don't seem to answer what I believe is a simple question. :E: I have an '03 fully equiped with a Bose 6 CD System. I want to add the stock CM receiver to the vechile. Can someone tell me what unit GM uses, where is it mounted, and is there any directions on the web on how to add it into the system. I would assume this is an easy task since the vehicle has this as a standard option? Am I being stupid to think this is a simple task? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm new to this board, so since I didn't see any replys, I guess I'll say something. I presume you typo'd "CM" and meant "XM" . The module locates behind the glove box. You may have to set up the system to recognize it (Tech II at the dealer). (Anyone please correct me if i'm wrong). It was a $325 option which I would hope would include the full install. I don't regret my XM option, 'love it..

Several members have inquired to dealers about adding the factory XM option to a Bose non-XM head unit. I believe everyone has gotten the same answer (including myself). You apparently cannot add the factory XM to a non-factory head unit. They supposedly use a different head unit even though the look alike (Bose 6 disk XM / Bose 6 disk non-XM). My dealer stated they would have to replace the entire head unit and then program for my truck. This is for the 2003 model, not sure what year you have.

Edited for typo...as usual...

rguzek,
I feel for you, I have the factory XM unit, but don't care for XM ( not slamming on XM, I just couldn't find a station I liked. Sirius on the other hand I do like.. just a personal preference.) I would much prefer having a 6 disc in dash, but if I read previous posts correctly, it is not as simple as swapping head units and adding a XM antena. What happen to the days when a radio was a RADIO?? Makes me mad the more I think about it.

rguzek,
Unfortunately, since your vehicle did not come with xm, it is not wired properly to accept xm nor can it be easily added. You would likely need to replace your entire wiring harness. the plugs that are needed are not even present (at least in all the units that I have seen). You could rig an aftermarket antenna into the gm xm unit, but that is about all you could hope to accomplish.

Thanks for the reply, but that is not good news. :C:
When I work on my foreign cars they have one harness, and you can add anything after the fact. In the US they have to make a million different hanesses. You would think they would of figured that the cost of a couple of unused plugs is cheaper than stocking all those different harnesses.

This Avalanche was already on the lot and it had everything I wanted on it but the XM, so I purchased it thinking it would a simple add-in... :E:

Just add the Delphi unit--that way you can use your subscription and hardware in multiple locations.

Now I have a little more time...
Contrary to the apparent popular belief, the XM module is not in the head unit.. It'd behind the glove box. When I replaced the 6-disk HU with the INR HU, the subscription was still on; no change in the XM ID. A friend at work bought a Monte Carlo a couple of days later with the Cassette/CD radio and inquired about the XM option as a DIO because the vehicle didnt have one. The Dealer indicated the only concern was the hole in the roof, not the electronic fit. It appears that the factory punches the hole prior to plating and painting the sheet metal. The vehicle tech's hadn't indicated wiring problems or compatabilities and in a sense, stated that these vehicles are "XM-Ready". But $325 vs $129 for a SkiFi that you can just unplug from your Av. and take it with you in a boom box or home adapter seems more practical. I have both the factory XM and the SkyFi and love 'em. You can do that with a Sirrus unit the same way. Unfortunately, Delphi focuses on cassette adapters or modulators (yuk) as the automotive connection for this model. If I recall a Sirrus model had a line out option.. Anybody else seen that for sure?

The unit behind the radio. Do you know if that was the adapter, or is there another piece of the puzzle that I am missing? I was hoping to just purchase the Pioneer Receiver, Adapter and cable, and Ant. to connect to my Bose 6-Disc?

I see the advantages to have a separate unit, but I would like to have a clean install (i.e. everything in the dash). I have a long commute, plus work long hours, so there is little time left at home to listen to music. I have an expensive component stereo system that just sits gathering dust at home. No time any longer to use it.

my 04 head unit , if u look real hard at the face plate seems to have xm as an option for the radio......im going to check it out my 03 has xm so im thinking about looking to see whats behind the heads unit.

The components for the factory 03 GM ,XM radio are:head unit, xm receiver, wire harness between the xm receiver and the head unit and the xm antenna.
In gm trucks, I've been told the xm receiver is behind the glove box. I've been trying to get a delphi/delco XM receiver and wire harness for the past year. No luck from the factory, EBAY and even junk yards.
I've changed my radio to a factory 6 disc cd player from a single cd/ cassette. It cost me $40.00 for the PCM to be reprogramed and was told that if I put in the xm receiver the pcm would need to be reprogramed again.

I'm new to forum, but I was looking into xm for a trailblazer. Per GM all radio that can take the gm disc player can take xm.

parts as follow:

cable,digital rdo rvcr :15172751

cable, digital rdo antenna( inline conn to ant) 15205597

receiver, digital rdo..must get from sep souce part :...22692861....

bolt/ screw,hwa for rvcr bracket..11516618 nds 2

bracket ,digital rvcr..15189091

cable,digital rdo ant...15190807

cable,digital rdo ant(rcvr to inline conn) 15205596.

ant, digital rdo(40mm high low profile ant)15174788

ant,digital rdo(35mm high low profile ant)15205583

hopes this helps all delco rdo should have plug in back to add this.

I can supply the name and contact number if needed for rcvr.

good info above. i have an '02 with XM i installed. i went both ways; FM modulator and IP Bus cable. the better of the two is the IP Bus connection. this will give you a digital sound out of the speakers. FM modulators turn the digital into analog by the time it hits the speakers.
as far as the look? in dash is much better looking. the FM modulated control heads are bulky (Delphi) or are hard to read (Pioneer) if not mounted properly.
as far as function? the function i thought was sub-par. the static you get from FM to XM sucks. the Pioneer does sound better than the Delphi in my opinion. this was due to the limited selection of stations the Delphi modulator has. just my $.02.

the xm box can be added to any hu. once it is added it will come up with the xm.
the problem with adding it to a diffrent vin than it was installed is is that it will lock it and only dephia can unlock. if you have installed it yet, try to get the vin it cam from. when the tech II is hooked up it will ask if this is the right vin of your vehical and then you can change the vin to the other vin I think. after that you should be able to hook it up and the change the vin back . It might work not sure. other wise it has to be swapped out and that I am tring to find out how to do just in case. I want xm also. It just takes the right person at gm to find out and that is the problem because none of them know one the lower levels.
