Thursday was the warmest day in quite a while so I removed the hard covers, stored the rear window, folded the midgate, rolled all of the windows down, and opened the sunroof.

I didn't really notice any more air than with the midgate up.

A 2" x 1" piece of mulch from the box blew into my lap.

The next morning I went to get into the AV and there was a bunch of crap by the door sill.

I looked at the front floor mats and they were covered in crap. All of the stuff that was in the bed ended up on the front floor mats. Dust, dirt, leaves, mulch, everything. I don't think I will try this again.

Anyone else seem this happen?

I have had this happen to me as well. If their is stuff back there it will fly. One thing I did notice once was I had a load of stuff about as high as the side walls & tailgate. I had a few tarps on top with some rope holding them down. I also had the rear window out to keep an eye and ear on the stuff because I was going on the highway. It was surprisingly quite. I can only attribute this to the fact that the air going over the roof & sail panels was slipping nicely off the top of the tailgate due to the load being that high. I bet if you try again and drop the tailgate, there will be a big difference.

Consider your self lucky, could have been carrying 500 lbs of cow poop for the garden project. ;D

Yeah ..cow poop could hamper visability quite a bit :9:
But is kind of neat to ride around with the window out (y)

I was thinking more of the stuff blowing into the cab, I knew a poor soul once that did that with the window on the back of his truck slid open :9:

i had a plant fall over in the bed with the midgate down and the dirt was everywhere. One thing I did for $40 bucks, was to go to the plexiglass (sign) shop and get 1/8 smoked plexi inserts made for the openings in the sides of the sail panels. These "opera windows" seem to let the air go by, and when you pull out the back window you can adjust the rear windows down about three inches and the air flow is equalized. the windows look really cool, I just ran a beauty bead of black silicone to hold them in.

So, change, you feel the added plexi inserts reduce the backflow of air? Interesting.
You must be good with a caulking gun to get a good looking bead.

And yet one more MOD!!! :0: :) ;) :D ;D >:D

Cow poop - years ago my brother worked on the grounds crew for a local college. For fertilizer they had donated horse manure, used by a place that grows mushrooms (called mushroom compost, just used horse manure). He borrowed one of their pickups and put a front loader bucket full into the truck. We then proceeded to drive home. The mushroom compost was steaming and a cloud trailed the pickup. It was a saturday and a college football game was about to start soon. The football stadium is across the street from the rest of the campus. You know how impatient college students are. One second after the pickup passed them they started to cross the street, then got a real good wiff of the stuff. Their facial expressions were priceless. We thought about circling back but we were tired of the smell ourselves.

I've been careful about what I put back there for that same reason...I don't want to get hit in the head by some undisirable objects.....most of the time anything I haul back there gives me the option of leaving the rear glass in place to I consider myself privilaged for now.....

This happened to me once when my brother and I bought a cord of fire wood. I thought it we be easier with the midgate down, then as soon as we took off, all the wood particles started flying all over the place.

After that time, I purchased the rear seat protectors for preventative clean up. Keeps it from getting scratched and it has the AV wording across it.

I guess I'm kinda lucky since my Av is still a new baby. Got it on 5/21/02 I did the "Av Convertible" and loved the ride. I haven't tried it since I added the GM Bug Basher or the window vent shades. The midgate drop was a sinch but it did take a few mins to get the hard panels into the bag correctly. I missed the fact that the bags has spacers in it for each panel. I have a small trailer so I'll probably keep the mulch and stone hauling in it.

Doogie

:B:When I picked up my Av on 5/14/02, had two of my daughters with me and sure enough, we couldn't leave the dealer without storing the back window, opening the sunroof and lowering all of the windows. Have never owned a convertible, however this surely has to be the next best thing. :B:

To Chasman or any av'er I went to the sign shop and slipped in the plexi side windows in the sail panels 'cause I thought it looked "right" the silicone bead might not look perfect, but nobody complained. and I just ran fort lauderdale to darlington round trip with the back window out. I had a 25foot boat behind me ao the way up and a 22 on the way back and still got 12-14 but I noticed on this trip with the window out when a semi would pass me I'm doin 67 mph i would get a reverse pressure wave back in thru the open window, but when cruising could adjust interior air flow thru the av thru the side windows. You know what else happened, I tried to drive 700 miles each way and ended up trying to sleep in the backseat at a roadside rest stop and rolled around and eventually crawled out thru the rear window and slept on #s 1 2 3 my av my friend on the road and in my driveway

Hey can you send a picture of this?

Yesterday was again a nice day so I did the same as the original post -

all 4 windows rolled down
sunroof open all the way
rear window out
midgate down
hard covers off

and something different - I dropped the tailgate. What a difference! With the tailgate up I get wind buffeting from the rear to the back of my head. With the tailgate down no wind buffeting and much quieter. There didn't appear to be any wind coming from the back forward. Has anyone else tried this combination?

I tried this with the tailgate down by accident one morning. In a hurry, I didn't have the gate shut properly. Driving down I-70, I heard a big bang... and believed I had run over something. I soon realized the gate was down and the air flow was indeed improved? Fortunately I had nothing in the bed or I'd have had a mess on the highway.
