CORRECT OIL FILTER?

For your '03 Z-71, the factory filter is a PF-44. ?:B:
The total refill w/ filter is 6qts.

The manual (for 5.3) calls for a PF-44 ?, but some here state a PF-59. ?Which is correct?
Go with what your manual says. Remember, that others may have a different year truck, or might have the 2500 with the 8.1L engine. These may take different filters, hence the confusion. Or, someone may have made a mistake in posting. If you're not absolutely sure about making a substitution, you really can't go wrong following the manual.

The 02s call for the PF-59. Like ShapeShifter said, follow your manual. There was a change made to the filter spec for the 5.3L between the 02 and 03.

Now having said that, I belive the only difference in the two types are the length. Maybe someone can confirm? It's possible that either one will work, but that's up to you. I'm sticking with the 59s in my dual filter set up becasue I want the longer filter for more filter surface on the inside and more cooling surface on the outside. (plus I bought a whole case of them!!)

5.3l engine . . . 2002 - PF-59, 2003 - PF-44 . . . . interesting - the question is why? If length is the only difference, a longer filter has more media. The only downside that I can see to a longer filter is if it hangs down far enough to be exposed to damage . . . but I don't think that's a problem . . . .

Anyone have any additional thoughts / insight?

They dont hang down that far - if you hit something that damaged the filter - you most likely would have other very serious problems. Sometimes filters are changed for reasons beyond normal explanation - if the thread size and pitch are the same and the seal is the same diameter they will interchange - I use the pf-59 on my 02 but thats what it calls for not really sure what the other looks like but if it is longer but eveything else is the same it should work - just remember if the filter is bigger the oil level on the dipstick will be slightly lower with 6 quarts installed as the filter holds a little more.

After a little research by Edward K and myself general concensus is they will interchange - however I suggest sticking with the one it calls for as to reduce liability on all our parts ;)

So what I mean is dont use the wrong filter and blame someone here. ;)

One possibility for the change is that GM might want to reduce the number of part numbers they have. And the shorter one will work for all vehicles that call for the PF-44 and the vehicles that call for the PF-59. (2 birds with one stone)

How about the correct oil filter for the 2003 with an 8.1 liter? Dealer told me an AC PF454. Just figured I'd check since they first told me a different number. I bought some other brand for about $7. I see filters for my truck for as high as $10 each. :8:
Anyone know a place to get oil filters cheap for the 2003 8.1 liter engine. I can't figure out why they are so expensive.

???And should I keep using the 5w30 that the manual calls out for? ???

My 00 Silverado has the 5.3 and I buy my oil filters (Supertech) at Wal-Mart for about $2 each when they are on sale. Works out great because I use the same filter on my 00 Cavalier. (Slightly larger than the one called out for but it works fine.)

If anyone is interested...it is okay to use the PF-44 on an '02 truck...possibly for the aforementioned reduction in parts...incidently...you can get an A/C Delco UPF-44 (the A/C Ultraguard filters) that they make for the Corvette and use it...it is the BEST filter I have found available...so the stats say, anyway! :B: ;D  :B:

Does anyone know the correct conversion to the Mobil1 filter? Went to the AutoZone and they looked up the numbers for the '02 and could not find the '03 so sold me the Mobil1 for the '02 version. Am reluctant to install it until I can find someone with knowledge who knows proper conversion. Anybody?? I use the Mobil1 5W-30 full synthetic oil and the Mobil1 filter was recommended but no number. I will watch every day for an answer before I change the oil. Thanks.

It's an M1-107 for the 2003 Z-71. ?For a '02 its a M1-206
Edward K, I've been using the M1-206 ???? since the parts store catalog only went up to 2002. The M1-206, filter fits fine and oil pressure has been fine ????
Where did you find the M1 filter information, I've been looking myself without any results.

TIA

The M1-107 is the replacement for the PF-44, I looked it up as a parts cross reference, not a year model. The 206 will work and, as far as I can tell, have no problems as it is the replacement for the PF-59 which came on all GM 5.3L V-8's from 99-2002. :B:

Howdy- I truly cannot thank y'all enough for the courtesy and fast response efforts. I was close as they sold me the M1-206 so I will return it for the M1-207 before draining the oil. Very, very much obliged- this is great since it did NOT appear anywhere else.

I guessing that you made a typo up there /\ but I want to make sure... It's the M1-107, you've got it as the M1-207

Yes- typo- I have them both in hand and the M1-206 is 3/4 inches fatter and 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch shorter than the 2002 version M1-107. I am returning the 2002 version tonight as I found the correct one [based on this post] in a store 180 miles from here [I was on a trip Weds./Thurs]. Thanks for pointing out the typo- it was a test to see if you were paying attention and you passed.

EdwardK- y'all are doin a darn great job of it. Your tip worked and the proper filter is on with fresh Mob1 full synthetic 5-30w. Computer said 50% life bu at 3800 miles seemed like time to change the original oil anyway.
