My AV was the victim of a South Texas hail storm attack. I stopped counting after 9 dimples (hood, front fender, drivers door).

Do you think a Vehicle Cover would be adequate protection or is it time to build her a covered port?

Sad day in the Alamo City

OUCH . . .

Most standard vehicle covers won't do the trick. I have heard of special covers designed for hail protection - they have a thick padding that is supposed to absorb the impact.

I live in Weld County Colorado - supposedly the second or third most likely place in the world for BIG hail - you know softballs raining out of the sky. I don't think that anything short of a garage would help there, but everytime it hails here, the car cover ideas hit the news.

I'd garage the Av - I'm sure sorry to hear of your damage.

I have the GM AV cover and although it is a great cover I doubt it would be of any help under those circumstances.

Anyone have the AV car cover? Any pros or cons? Do you use it for outdoor and/or indoors only?

Thanks!

I have a car cover that I got from the dealer. I have been using covercraft for my other vehicles, but I liked the dealer one because it was a little lighter a more loose-fitting. The problem w/ a heavy cover is that it will eventually scratch the finish as dirt builds up on it. It' also highly recommended that you at least rinse the car well before putting it on, for the same reason. It is somewhat of a pain to use on a daily basis, but I do my best. Mostly I use it to keep the sun off of the interior, especially the leather.

Good points...and some more to think about...

The truck should be spotless before puting a cover on or as the cover moves the dirt under will marr the paint....So before puting one on a Qucik Detail should be done....

Also the truck should be dry as well since the water will not escape that fast and well that is not good.... >:D

I do remember a thread some time ago about covers....I remember I gave a tip for protection against hail using a cover by putting inflatable rafts under the cover on the hood and roof to protect those surfaces from the falling hail.....

I have one that was given to me.

I use it outdoors. It does save me from having to detail my AV so frequently ... more time that I can spend on the site >:D

I have to remember to put my antenna on after I take the cover off.

OK ... What is the trick to put this thing on by yourself? I always need help.

Ygmn ... I thought you were kidding about the inflatables to protect against the hail. Will any kind do? ;)

Preferable SAND free ones....but get the CHEAPOS...It really does work cause the hail bounces off the air mattress.....so no dents in hood or roof....Notmuch you can do for the sides unless you can fit them in there with out blowing away.....

Inflate them like you normally would and make sure they are clean...you may want a nice soft towel under them so they do not marr the paint.....

See I do have some ideas once in awhile >:D

I recently purchased the custom fit Noah truck cover (P/N 173-13280) from Wolf Products. The cover is custom fit to the Avy with mirror pockets as well. It protects again everything. Rain, wind, dust, etc.
I paid around $250 for it and I highly recommend it. :)
Check out their website at www.saddleman.com

I started with a light weight had my GM brush guard put on it fit no more. Now I have a NOAH cover a little heavier & easier to put on and off by my self now. I like it a little better than a light weight cover. Better for protection from dogs jumping or hail storms, and it fits now. ;D

How do you put it on by yourself? What's your method?

I get frustrated and usually end up getting help.

Ygmn ... All this time I thought you were talking about putting Bedroom Betty out in the storm

Great, thanks for the tips everyone. ?Especially about the inflateable. ?Who woulda thought?

Since I've been traveling alot my poor white AV has been exposed to the elements. ?Also with SoCalCindy's key scratching incident, this has prompted me to think about this car cover more.

I'll check out saddleman.com right now. ?The local Chevy dealer has the car cover with AV log for 305.00. ?Hmmm 250 without logo (plus shipping and handling) or 305 with logo (no shipping and handling)?

I just checked www.gmpartsdirect.com website and they have the AV car cover for 213.50.

Ahhhhhhh Goo you can save her for the rainy days.

Roarin try a site sponsor and/or use these prices to beat up on your local dealer to get better pricing....

Goo puting them on is a PIA and if you do by your self could marr the paint....I would suggest rolling the thingy up from both ends when storing it...then when installling....start on the roof and unroll backwards to tailgate...and then unroll forward to hook up front....

Or just use some DUCT tape to help hold it in place >:D

Goo when the cover is on fold the sides up onto the roof so the cover is only on the roof(both sides folded onto the top)start on the hood now and fold the cover in two foot sections until you get to the back of the roof, lay the rest of the cover on the back cover and the rest should be easy from there. Hope this makes sense. Get me a fax # i'll fax the instructions to you tomorrow.

Thanks JIM ... I will give that a try ;D

You are saying that even the GM Brush Guard, your Noah cover still fits? I now have and use the Noah cover because there is NO ROOM in my garage for my Av  As far as the Noah cover is concerned, I really like it. Keeps the AV clean for weeks at a time. All it needs is touch ups with the California Duster. The reason I asked about the cover still fitting with the GM Brush Guard is that I have been thinking of installing one on my AV. Makes it really stand out, and I have seen lights mounted on them as well, so that is doable too. So, just let me know if the Noah cover still fits with the GM Brush Guard or not, if yes, I have my next mod lined up. ;D

I bought the Gm Accessories Car Cover and it works fine. It fits with all gm accessories slides over the radio anntenna and mirrors all i do is remove the onstar antenna but it fits great and was worth the $$$ plus it says avalanche on it. just my 2 cents l8tr

I recently ordered a few items from them and was pleased with the results. Thought I would share a link to their site. They seem to carry a cool assortment of stuff for cars & trucks. Check it out. They have also have a cool seasonal catalog that they send out.

California Car Cover Co.

Does any body know which is the superior cover for the money? ?GM advertises the Stormshield at $300.00. ?GM Parts direct has them at $ 213.50 but disconued.
California Car Cover has the Custom Stormweave for the Avalanche at $ 219.00. ?Has any body bought these or bought some other or has extensive knowledge in this area. ? :cautious:

Gluggo, as a rule of thumb you'll pay a premium for any GM licensed and labeled products of comparable quality to those in the aftermarket. Since GM doesn't make car covers, one of the a/m companies are supplying them to the General.

Someone out there must have bought one of these either stock or aftermarket or are they just a waste of money? ?Good site Irontrain, Thanks!

Irontrain,

Thanks for the link, that looks like a cool site, I've never been on there before.

I am planning on getting a cover, I've had one for my 3 past trucks. We have a camp that we go to in the summer so I park under pine trees and the cover really helps. If it weren't for the camp I wouldn't get one either.

i had a Wolf brand car cover years ago. it was a very good cover IMHO. i could even put it on if the car was slightly dusty, and it still would not scratch. it was for a Camaro, and was fairly large. i can imagine what a task it would be to put one on an AV by yourself. :8:

ANyone found a car cover that fits this thing? I need to buy one soon, as i'll be leaving my Av for a month....so needs to be covered and lockable if possable. THanks

:D: Just thought this was a kewl smiley
