Day 2 Of Camping In AV Well......

Yesturday I went up to Morgan lake and did some fishing and camped in the back of my AV tent. So I came down the mt. to do some posting and got some supplies and went back up I had just got my AV tent up and organized. I was getting ready to cast out and then I crack of thunder and a flash of lightning a storm had moved/moving in QUICK I got on my onstar to check the weather here is what I heard "La Grande Oregon Severe Weather warning, Thunder showers, Lightning, and possable tornado warnings. The national weather service says "get to good shelter so I took my tent down and loaded up the AV while I was driving out I saw a guy chasing his tent as if rolled in to the lake as of now the wind is blowing really hard and trees leaves are blowing all around my AV is just coverd in dust. So Camping of Day 2 was crushed

But here is a pic I took while the weather was nicer as you see it does not even look like it is going to storm. This is my AV with the tent and my boat

yeah no kiding luckly I only live about 5-10 miles from the lake but hey last night was great calm weather and warm it is still warm about 85 degrees but not it is just really windy

What kind of boat do you have on that trailer

it is a Pelican Paddle boat it is small but it works good for lake

Wow.. technology, on-star and weather alerts. Do you remember the days when you didn't know about the bad weather coming your way... until it arrived?

ummm not any time that I can remember I am too young but my dad says he remembered when he did not even have a TV when he was a kid NO COMPUTER!!!!AHH I would go crazy with out CAFCNA

LOL.... well mate, it's getting harder but not impossible to get back to nature nowadays. Take a walk with only a pack and go walkabout for a few days into the bush. Take a compass and a map but leave behind your GPS and anything that needs power.

Get back to basics... you may be surprised, you might enjoy it.

Morgan Lake looks awfully inviting. It would be a tough call wether to fish it or swim it.

Getting away is getting harder and harder. Nothing like just casting your line in the water and having your boss call you on the cellphone.

So now that you have used your AV tent a couple times... any advise? tips? are they worth buying?

Where is La Grande? I was in Bend, and my wife and son got some pretty severe thunderstorms while I was fishing the Metolius on Saturday - Not even a drop of rain while I was on the river. We got some rain Sunday on the Deschutes below Maupin, but no Thunder and Lightning.

The Av, by the way handled the rough roads well, but I am sorry to say that we ruined the Oregon truot fishing season for the rest of the summer. Why? Well, I'm glad you asked. Trout rely primarily on insects for their food source, and every insect East of the Cascades in Oregon is currently stuck to the front of my truck!!

LaGrande is about 45 miles southeast of Pendleton on I-84.

Getting away is getting harder and harder. ?Nothing like just casting your line in the water and having your boss call you on the cellphone. ?

That's easy to solve. Turne the cell phone OFF. People forget that there are power switches on those things. If you're worried about missing an important call just turn it on once in a while to check voice mail. That way you won't get interrupted and important calls will still get answered in a reasonable amount of time.

My personal feeling on the tent is that it's WAY nifty and would be a cool way to road trip. But it looks like you'd have to take all the camping gear that you brought with you and stow it on the ground or something while you're sleeping in it. If you don't have a trailer that is. So for now I'm sticking to a regular tent which I can setup on the ground and pack away with all the rest of the gear inside the bed of the AV otherwise.

How did the fishing on the Met and Deschutes go? How were the hatchs?

The Met was slow. We didn't see anything hatching at all, and no rises either, so we nymphed. I had a couple of bumps on a bead head pheasant tail, but nothing I could latch on to. The river was loaded with bugs, though. Every rock I looked under was crawling with them.

The Deschutes was better, but not great. We fished down towards Mack's Canyon in the morning, then up above Maupin in the afternoon and evening. Managed to catch a handful of smaller fish and one good sized suckerfish. There weren't a lot of hatches through the day, but there was a pretty good caddis hatch in the late afternoon, followed by a decent salmonfly hatch. Those things are freakish! They're gigantic. I love fishing with dry flies that I can actually see! We were using size 4 Stimulators and managed to rise a couple fish, but despite the hatch, we didn't see many fish coming to the surface.

At any rate, it was better than working, and was a nice get away for a couple of days.

Sometimes I think you all have more money then sense, for about 20 dollars you can buy a weather radio that will tell you the same thing as onstar. Don't get me wrong I like onstar as well as the next guy, but I don't want to waste my minutes finding out about the weather when I can get the some info for free.

What did you do with the bed cover pieces? Does the tent fit with them in their bag on the side?

While we were camping at out Northern Indiana Camping GTG last month, Mongo Ranger & wife camped in their Avalanche tent. The second night we got a good storm, high winds, lighting and rain. The tent held just fine and they said they got 5-6 drops of water on them. Jen didn't fair so well.....she got a limb down across the back of her Avalanche! I don't think it did any damage but never talked to here after they got home and got it cleaned up.
