What does everyone think of the chances of  :B: putting a Durmax in a future Avalanche?  ???  I strongly doubt it, but with gas prices going they way they are...I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Slim to none, with slim being on a LONG vacation.

The 4.5L might have a decent chance but probably not till 2011 model or later.

They would have to make it a 2500 HD to start with (the Duramax is heavy) and the cost would shoot up about $5000 to cover the Duramax and the Allison tranny with it.

Having recently owned at Duramax/Allison combo I'd love it.  But not sure they could sell that many of them.  It would be a pretty specialized vehicle..

Guess the part of the country would have something to do with that.  Out here in the mountain states the diesels are very common in trucks.  The added pulling power helps get the toys into and over the hills.  Diesel trucks have to be closing in on 40 or 50% in these parts.

GM is showing a diesel 2500HD Suburban at SEMA this week, using GM's new smaller diesel.

Given the relationship between the Suburban and the Av, a good response to the Suburban may lead to diesel production for both.

A Diesel would be the ONLY way I'd trade my 2003. Not enough changes to the 07+ to warrant new payments.

Unless the MPG is 25mpg or better  and you need even more towing power all the diesel is going to do is cost you more money at the pump. Diesel around here is 20-25cents more per gallon than gas and gas is almost $3/gal. stike that, about 40 cents more per gallon.

None (with exception of volkswagen) of the new generation 08 + diesel are getting any better than 13-15 mpg with ford taking the biggest hit at 8-9 mpg at best empty. They are claiming 20 or better with the 4.5L, have to wait till they are out awhile to see for sure. with all the emessions junk in the exhuast fuel mileage is out because they are firing the injectors an extra time on the exhuast stroke to light the cats and dpf filters also pushing exhuast temps after the cat to over 1050 degrees.

unless the mpg changes drasticaley I will stick with my 8.1L.

I say.......the 4.5L Duramax is going to make it's debut in the '09 Avi just as it will with all the other 1/2 tons in the GMT900 program.  By then, however, the hybrid truck "debacle" will be trashed and the General will need to fulfill the CAFE standards.  What better way than to produce on an existing success story?  I will be the first at my dealer to get a new Avi diesel.

I love the smell of "diesel" burning in the morning!

My husband just got an issue of Four Wheeler magazine and there is a spread on a guy who put a diesel in his Avalanche, pretty cool truck. He did a lot of different mods to it. You should check out the issue. It's the March 2008 issue with the picture of a Ford Super Duty (Red) on the cover.

I would be all over a 4.5l diesel.  I love my newly acquired 2500, but the chance to put a diesel in would be awesome.

I'm wondering though if they will make a 2500 version again or if it will simply be a 1500.  I could see some really big driveline issues if they don't put a heavy duty transmission in there.  Especially once people start cranking up th power on the deisel's, and you know we will be!

Am I reading it right, coming as an 10' model?  Means we should see them in a year or so.

I bet they won't do the 2500 as historical sales were not there.  However, I think I read on the announcement that The General is going to match the new 4.5L Duramax with an Allison tranny.  That would be the only way I would get one.  I want more gears than just four........ :needhug:

There is a post on another forum from someone who emailed GM about the applications for the engine.? Initially it will not be in the Suburban, despite the showing a the show.? It is currently only planned to roll out on the pickups and the H2.

What I'm wondering is if the Avalanche is considered a pickup or SUV for GM and whether it will be going in there or not.

Copy of the email, posted on another forum:

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your interest in our 4.5LV-8 Duramax high output diesel that we will launch initially in 2009 in our Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra light duty pickups followed by the HUMMER H2. There hasn't been any further announcements regarding future applications, but the Duramax does package very nicely in the space of a small block V-8 so it opens the door for us to consider it in a Suburban, Yukon XL or a Cadillac.

I can assure you that if the customer interest is there, we will definitely be weighing all future possibilities.

Best regards,
