Does anyone have a dash cover?

Snoball said:
The local shop here in Albuquerque recommended two other associated pieces to go along with their dash mat.  Here is the cover for the flat area above the glove box...with embroidered logo.
that glove box piece is sharp!  (y)

Good question...actually the glove box piece is hinged with velcro so the air bag can still deploy and pop without disturbing the carpet piece.

The dash in my 1st gen 2006 Av has been in perfect shape since the day I bought it 14 years ago, and I have never had any problems...even with the Texas sun. However, my understanding is that with the 2nd gen Avs, it is not a matter of if the dash will crack...but when.

The previous owner of my 2nd gen already replaced the the dash due to cracking, and there are no cracks now. I would like to keep it that way, so I am taking a proactive stance and looking to put on a dash cover. My plan is to cover it now, so it will not crack. However, as I have discovered, there are many options...carpet, velour, ABS, etc. Here is a link for one of the articles I read:

However, I am looking for actual feedback from people with 2nd gen Avs to find out what their experiences are. Can you please provide feedback and post some pics.

Thanks,

Tom

Good evening Raleigh, and wow this is a 13 year old post!

This is slightly different than what you're asking but I have a theory that you can prevent the dash crack from occurring by installing a support. I used a small chunk of heavy foam and a little gorilla tape under the center of the dash, which is left unsupported from the factory.

Procedure: Remove the pull bar and side pillars on each side. Next remove the front dash panel insert where the air vents from, this is held in with friction clips, pry gently upward (bonus tip, add small strips of duct tape to the clips when reinstalling to reduce dash rattles/vibrations). Then you may notice that the dash is not supported in the center at all, and if like mine it floats almost 1 inch above the support bar in the center section. Shove the hand-crafted support foam/rubber/whatever into place and the dash will be supported and should relieve the stress that causes it to crack.

I already had 1 small crack on my dash, and the support foam brought the center section up and now inline with the rest of the dash, making the crack barely visible. Perhaps you could prevent your dash from cracking at all.

Thanks for the advice BainMan,

Sorry for my ignorance, but could you please explain what you mean when you say remove the pull bar and side pillars on each side. Do you have any pics?

I had my 2006 Av for the past 14 years and never had to worry about cracks. Recently sold that one and got a 2013...a decision I am not sure was the best one...but I am making the best of it.

When I drive down the road I can see the dash on this one go up and down slightly. If I push it slightly with my finger it depresses...no wonder these things crack so easily.

By the way, does the vinyl covering on your door handles curl too? This is another thing I never had to contend with for my 2006 Av. It is amazing to me the difference in fit and finish between 1st and 2nd gen models.

Thanks,

Tom

Excuse my term, pull-bar should be passengers grab handle (oh-poop handle). It and the pillar trim are held on with 2 small bolts. The driver side only has 1 small bolt because there is no handle. This video gives all the detail you need to repair except they don?t add the foam for support like you might.
