Does The Surburban Have As Many Problems As The Av

I have been browsing this site for a while now and was just wondering :cautious:, if anybody has a 2002 or 2003
Surburban as a second choice to the Av, with as many problems or the same problems as the Avalanche ???

I have a 2003 Av with none of these problems and I have 10,000 miles on her.

I read about brakes failing, thumping noises, sagging bed covers, mid gate's leaking etc. Does any body know
if the Surburban has similar problems? Also........

I wonder if some of these mods we are doing are bad :( ??? :cautious:

I happen to own both vehicles, my Av has 5000 miles and my Surburban 49000. I haven't had any major problems with my Surburban other than the door locks didn't work very well with the remote, the dealer replaced 3 of them under warranty coverage. No other major issues to report.

I guess I have a certain level of comfort having a 3 yr warranty on both vehicles.

My AV has 27,000 miles with no problems!!!!!

My sister and Brother in law have a Yukon XL...no probs there either.

You will find the the people who do have problem will seek out a site like this to vent their problems. I think the AV has a very good record as far as problems go, it is just that you hear about the few problems that some do have. People who are satisfied tend not to post as much. This is true in just about every forum that I have visited.

Example: Joe Blow bought a XYZ toaster. It burnt the toast every time. Joe was not happy and posted to every site he could find about the bad toaster. He posted many times to a lot of sites.

6 million others bought the same model toaster and never had a problem and it made great toast. They never went online to check out the toaster because they are happy.

Tom Smith went online to check out toasters because his old one went out after 30 years of good service. Tom finds posts all over the place about the XWZ toaster burning the toast so he starts looking elseware!

In fact XWZ might be the BEST toaster out there but because one (or just a few) were having problems with it and were very vocal about the problems XYZ company is now losing a lot a sales.

This is a big problem with the internet. People think everything they read is gospel and don't tend to look at the bigger picture.

The internet is just wonderful but you need to find several sources for information. Look at the big picture. Check out the recall record of the Avalanche. Look on sites that do road tests. And most of all find people that are driving them and go up and talk to them. This way you don't get the random person who is posting all his problems and who is never satisfied with much of anything!

Who said all these problems exist on the avy...........

I ahd one problem...cracked rear window molding.....replaced under warranty........

As for the others....I do not have...............And mine is olddd

Take away the leak problems associated with the midgate and the other problems show up across the GM Truck line to some extent. Some people never notice them, some quietly live with them, and some vent. And some even blow it all out proportion. Aren't we glad that doesn't happen here. ;)

I have to agree with BUTCH. I have done my fair share of complaining about leaks on mine, mainly because I let it get the best of me. Sometimes it feels better to "air it out", as opposed to keeping it in.

Another way to look at it is there are not problems, only solutions.

I'm with ygmn in that the only time mine has been to the dealer was for the rear window trim. I have the Avalanche 1.0 (early build) and it has been extremely trouble free in almost two years for me (y).

You should always expect to have some problems with a new vehicle. It would be nice to not to but come on people, use some common sense.
Cars/trucks have gotten increasingly complex with electronics and still are made up of THOUSANDS of parts. To think that every car bought should be flawless for the entire life of that car is ludicrous.

Have I had problems with mine, yes. Am I whining about it, NO!!

OK I am now stepping off my soap box.... let the flames begin :p

12,000 miles + and not a single problem yet with the Av. That is amazing considering it is a new model, and a vastly different model than anything else on the market. Chevy pushed the envelope without subjecting its Av owners to massive problems.

Another thing to consider when evaluating problems is the extent of the problem. I could have three little minor problems with the Av fixed under warranty. Or I could have the infamous transmission problem with a Chrysler minivan, that costs me thousands of dollars to fix down the road. In that case, I'd rather have three problems instead of one problem. Most of the Av problems I've heard about are minor annoying stuff that has been fixed under warranty. I haven't heard about blown transmissions or brake failures or other systemmatic issues.

OK bloke... I'll start the flaming...
The problem with common sense... is that it really isn't that common. ;)

Thanks for the responces......I don't think the Av is a
completely new model. It shares most of it mechanical
componets with the Suburban. I know it has some new items like the midgate but he problems I have read on this site have been major ie BRAKE FAILURE,
FRONT END PROBLEMS, 4WD PROBLEMS, RECALLS on
bolts that could puncture the gas tank!!, Weak tranmissions and so on. If it is true that the AV shares
a frame, supension, front and rear end compontes. My question is......Are these problems on the Suburban? If so why has GM not fixed these., because I feel the Av leads the way for trucks and SUV in the future.

Thanks, :cautious:

You must be reading the rare and random instances of these types of problems that occur on any line of vehicles.

The problems you pseak of seem rare though amounst the crowd here.....so hard to answer your question...
Any problem with the burb & avy because of related parts would seem to be fixed.....if you look at the recall thingys you do not see many where the avy and burb are together ....which means to me the common parts are working

I have a 2002 Av 2500 4X4 with the 8.1. In Sept it will be 2 yrs. I also have a 2003 Suburban 2500 2WD with limited slip and the 8.1. No problems with either vehicle.

I must be blessed - knock on wood real fast. I have had no problems with my 02 AV or my wifes 01 Suburban, they are and I am sure will remain with (proper care) the best vehicles I have ever had. ;) :D ;D
