Domed Tailgate Lettering

Looking good....the tailgate letters just change the whole look of the AV in my opinion! Great looking AV! (y)

dale1500,

I ordered mine from Tribal AV. He has different types of tailgate lettering. The one I ordered was a reflective type decal. It looks black, but depending on the angle and the light it changes different colors. My tailgate letters were the adhesive type...like a sticker, I've had it on my truck since November 03...no problems easy install. The other type of decal is where you use a soap and water solution to apply the letters, easy to maneuver and then let it dry. Once they are dry, they ain't moving...If you check out some of my pics from our GTGs in TX, I have pics of our Tailgate Lettering by Tribal AV...Click on "under construction" for photos...I hope this helps!

Dale,

The domed tailgate lettering was really easy. I would say the "R" and the "E"s were a bit more difficult to apply.
The cladding letters were a PITA. They came with 2 backings for what the manufacturer said was for ease of installation. But man was it hairy. First you peel a little from the bottom backing to apply the letters and peel as you go then you let the decals sit for a few then you peel the upper backing off, then you're done. But the upper backing is not exactly see thru, so part of the time you're guessing if you're on the right spot before you press down. I wish they gave you an extra one in case you mess up. Since I applied the tailgate cladding decals right after I did the domed tailgate lettering, that's the one I'd like to do over. The door cladding decals were a snap since I learned from my mistakes on the tailgate cladding. If you stand a few feet away you can't see my mistakes. But if you get real close you can see where I screwed up a little. :cautious:
Oh well, I think it looks great though.

Maryland AVer,

where did you get the cladding letters? was it on this site? or from another source... I'm looking for something a bit special... haven't found it here :6:

thanks in advance (y)

danlwil2500,

I first saw the domed tailgate lettering from a site called:

www.autotrimdesign.com

But they wanted like $75. for them after shipping. OUCH!

Then I was browsing Ebay and found them being offered by the same company but for only $51. after shipping. Much better!
I got the cladding letters also from the same guys. They're $25. on their site and only $21. after shipping on Ebay. They're user name on Ebay is wwwautotrimdesigncom. It's their web address without the "dots".

Maryland AVer,

Your Av looks great, nice job ;D

It's funny, I just did these same 2 mods about 2 weeks ago!

I did the silver metallic from autotrimdesign.net.
I really like the way they look on my black av.

You're right about the cladding letters being a little scary.
I tried to apply the first one in one piece like a bumper sticker, but it's hard to see if you're lined up straight. The next two went much easier when I decided to cut them into individual letters and apply them one at a time.

JerseyAV got any pics????

That's where I got mine from. I cheated when I put on the tailgate lettering. I took the tailgate off, cleaned it, and brought it in the house and let it sit for a while to warm up (it was about 40o degrees outside), laid it dow flat and started applying the domed decals, then started on the cladding decals. (That was last Nov)

I put the rest of the cladding decals on when I was down south for Thanksgiving (it was about 75o out)

Now . . . the domed letters on the tailgate look great. The ones on the cladding, however, are a different story: they are all peeling up. The one on the tailgate is not noticable unless your close up. The one on the grill guard was fine (until I had to replace the grill guard). The ones on the doors are by far the worst. The "A" on the driver door and the top of the "E" on the passenger door are peeled way back (these are both on the front edge, so I have to wonder if this is caused by wind)

JerseyAV,

It's pretty funny, but I actually did the opposite for applying the cladding letters than what you did. I started on the tailgate as one full sticker but after I applied the "A" and then started on the "V", I knew I was in trouble. I had the wife get me a pair of scissors and I cut the strip into indvidual letters. Then I applied each letter at a time. I then peeled the upper backing off right away from each letter without letting the decals stick for awhile. This was wrong because the decals were peeling off at the same time and I had to restick them down as I peeled. There was a small ripple on the "CH" decal but it's hardly noticable.
For the doors, I was determined to make it work by applying it as a full strip. I started from right to left and this actually worked out best. Also I left the upper backing on for about 5 mins each and had almost no problems that I was experiencing on the tailgate cladding decals when peeling it off.

Bonesaw,

That's a bummer about your cladding decals. I was wondering about the durability of them. I don't feel the decals stick to the plastic like they stick to painted metal. But I'll see how it goes and if they start to really peel then I might splurge on the stainless lettering.

I keep telling you guys to use the Jump Page for CAFCNA at AutoTrim Design. Much cheaper with the AV club discount!

blackbeauty,

The weather is pretty crappy in NJ this week. I'll try to post some pics next time I wash the Av (hopefully this weekend)

Maryland AVer,
I found that when I tried to apply the cladding decals in one piece certain letters didn't line up right (especially the "v" and the "ch", which were just a hair too far left). I'm glad I did the passenger side first, figuring if I screwed it up, that would be the side I would see the least. (y) It still looks great, though, not as perfect as I would like.

It was like right at 50 degrees the day I did it and I also had a hard time getting the letters to stick. But I got a hair dryer and warmed up the cladding and letters (not too much) and the letters stuck much better. I also wiped the area down with rubbing alcohol and let dry, like the web instructions recommend. All the decals are rock solid, no peeling at all.

Jersey AV,

I had that same problem on the pass door only. Since I started at the "E" going from right to left, by the time I got to the "A" at the beginning of the word "AVALANCHE", I had to fold the upper backing just a little to get it to line up. The drvr side door lined up perfectly with no problems. Man I just wish that they used a clear upper backing so you can see thru to the cladding letters while you're applying them.
