Hi, I have the US trailer hitch in my 2002 Avalanche 2500, but there is no way to legalize it in Spain.

Anyone has found a suitable European trailer hitch or a way to modify the existing one that would make it legal in Europe?

Thanks folks!

Shelbi or ChevyFan Germany should be able to help you out on this one.

Hi jordizr1,

welcome to the Outside Americas Gang

I have a 2002 AV 1500 Z71. I still use the stock hitch receiver (the square tube with two holes under the rear bumper).
Into this tube I put a hitch bracket from a German company called Buesching.
This is the link:

This hitch has a German certificate for 3500kg but is very expensive (300 - 400 ? plus shipping). I had to ask a lot of German inspectors to get it legal, because most of them said, the paper is only for the hitch, but they need a German certicate for the car itself. But there are no German certificates, because the Av was never sold here. Mine is from Canada.

Hope this helps. If not feel free to ask for help.

Yes, that's right.

Its typically German, that you need a TUV certificate for nearly every ad-on on your car. Its a wonder that you don't need a certificate for the  waste in the garbage can of your car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is always a fight against the admission office :beating:

that's the way its' beginning to feel over here.... too many freedoms being taken away.... People want safety which requires regulation and with that comes the loss of freedom.

Seems to me that the couplers we use are just as heavy.... go figure

anyway...

What he is saying anything that is added to the vehicle must have a certificate stating it meets or exceeds specs.

Speaking of trailer hitches ... I just got one in the mail yesterday.  The problem is I did not order it and I can't remember who did.  Anyone missing a hitch?

Also ... any idea how many more posts I have to make before I can send PM's?

Thanks SAM...so he added an aftermarket hitch and it has to be inspected...do you get a ticket or something if you don't get it inspected?

Yes, that's me!!!! You gave me your APO address for it 3 weeks ago. Remember?  Can you please give it to me in Seligenstadt? Thanks.

I think you need 75 posts.

The newest stupid law comes next Friday. It says that you can not get any grill guard legal if it is not approved for pedestrian safety. I get mine tomorrow!!!! A modified stainless steel guard made for a Nissan Patrol.

those are some stout looking hitches

Yes those hitches are a problem! I had to go along a very expensive route even to get an allowance for the AV to pull anything.

When the AV came from Canada it had to be imported in Germany before it could be imported into Holland. During the Germany step they omitted to import the hitch. So I was not allowed to pull anything.  The only solution the officials saw was to export the Av back to Germany, get the hitch on the car papers and import it back into Holland. That would mean a very tough and expensive path. I was lucky to meet somebody who proposed me a (more obscure) escape route. For which of course I got a pricey bill.

:E: but as long you got the piece Paper  its snow from yesterday  >:D

Thanks Schelbi, now I remember.  No problem, I can bring it in a couple weeks.

Still no Honda yet.  They took out the engine to begin repairs and discovered more damage.  So, they had to order more parts which means the whole repair is delayed.  Looks like early June it may be done.

Hey Erik,

does the insurance pay a rental car as long as yours is not running?

My dad had a Chevy Blazer (his second S10) a few years ago. A girl with a new BMW hit him standing at a traffic light. The BMW was totally wrecked as well  as the Toyota standing in front of him. The Blazer looked like new but the doors were hard to open. He had a hitch on the back and a brush guard on the front mounted to the frame. So the frame was compressed but no damage to the rest of the car. The insurance paid a rental car for half a year. It took so long because they ordered a completely new frame from the States!

A year later he changed the Blazer for a Tahoe. That's one reason I love Chevys!!!!

Just wondering: did the topic starter Jordizr1 ever react to one of you?

I'm here!

Sorry for the delay in answering, I have been out for a week.

My Avalanche came with the US hitch, but there is no way to get a certificate for that one.

I have been having a look at the B?sching hitch ball, I guess if it is legal in Germany it should be good for Spain too, but will have to ask the ITV (T?V) guys here.

Will ask a spanish hitch builder if he can do anything  to help.

Finally, is there any electrical adapter that will solve the problem of the turn/stop ligts flashing in a different way than in Europe? or the only solution is to cut the US harness and re-wire it?
