I feel kinda stupid for asking this,

behind the glovebox and i know someone else here looked into doing this but not sure if he went through with it. Kinda really buried up there and I personally like to have access to my stuff.

After reading this I went on a search for an amp that would FIT. I found a Blaupunkt velocity v 420 1.6x5.3x6
It would definately fit . Impulsivly I bought it. Brand new only 10 bucks. really good amp. Old model http://www.blaupunktusa.com/pdfs/amps/v420.pdf
With speaker level and alot of options BUT after having time to reflect... is this larger or a little louder than the stock unit? Until I can find the answer to this I have a very nice paper weight. If it only gives me a little more power I will install and let you know.

Ha! now that's a new one! would LOVE to hear your review if it's better than the OEM amp. I have always felt that the biggest problem with an amp in that location (obviously more powerful than OEM) would be heat dissapation....but then again, what do I know.

:)

I am hopeing that A higher quality amp at only 20x4 will or should not give me too much to worry about.
Looks like we have tons of air below and maybe 3-4 beer cans of air above it. can even mount it a few inches lower than the stock one on the mounting plate to give me a six pack! IF and ONLY IF I can have someone tell me it will give a little more power than stock.

Did you replace the HU Scot?

The reason I ask is because most of the HU's out there today are either 45x4 or 50x4 which is right around where you're at with your new amp (20x4 RMS). I would estimate that the stock amp is right around there too.
I'm just curious as to what differences you'll actually see :cautious:

WHy not upgrade to a larger amp that will still fit under the back bench, and upgrade to better speakers in the doors ???

All,

This is a great thread! I'm fighting the "Speakers vs. Amp" battle in my head over and over again. I think I've decided to go with some speakers first...just in the front. If I notice a considerable improvement, then I'll move to the rears as well. I have my doubts about the "cleanliness" of the AMP output, but, the speakers provide a much easier solution. Crutchfield does a great job with detailed instructions and any and all required hardware and adaptors. I'm placing my order today.

It's a good start. let me know if you need guidance with your speaker install. I have posted much info. on this and pictures (click my sig). ZimmsAV has also posted a lot of information.

You are correct about the OEM amp. Many good HU's will match the power output but that is only part of the equation. I also question the cleanliness of the OEM amp as do many "experts" I have talked to.

But you are approaching the project correctly. Replace all speakers (easy). Then tackle the amp & HU. This will require new speaker wire and running power to your amp so it does get involved.

What speakers did you order?

Good Luck!

Wayno, If you check out my thread Internet Buying & Stereo Overhaul you'll find online stores that will humiliate Critchfields prices.

I ordered my whole system through Sounddomain, and couldn't be happier. It is such an improvement over stock, and I haven't even solved the sub problem yet.
I have 2 unopened kicker 10's, but I'm trying to sell them to get 1 dvc 12 to sit in the middle of the floor in the back.
You can find out more at my album under my profile or in the thread above.

Absolutely, the further I get into "this", crutchfield seems to be pricing itself outside of this game.

Example: recently took delivery of a US Acoustics Class D amplifier. Crutchfield had it listed for something near $300. Add tax to that and shipping and it would be around $350 total. Went to sounddomain, the had a special on the amp for $169, no tax since it's out of state and offered free shipping.

Take your time and shop around. Crutchfield does offer pretty good technical support so keep that in mind when shopping. Some of the money you spend with crutchfield goes towards their technical support.

Is there a thread about amping just the four door speakers? Will that alone make much of a difference with good speakers?

Are you asking if an aftermarket amp and speakers is an improvement over stock or did I misunderstand your question?

Car,

Thanks for the tips and the support....You're pictures are clear...nice work! I'm actually looking at "Kicker" myself. I was going to order on Saturday, but after reading about the potential price differences, I'll place my order today. I've had the truck since March. I had to make sure that it was a "keeper" before any modifications. I came across this club last week and it's been a huge help. Great tips. For instance, I read about the Sylvania SilverStar Headlight replacements and upgraded to those this weekend. Nice touch with definite visibility improvements.

Maverick,
The amp that is currently running your door speakers is behind your glove box. If you only wanted to change the amp and keep the factory speakers to save money you could pull out the stock amp and put in a new one there and maintain the same speaker leads. However I do not recomend this, because then you're just pushing more power through crappy speakers.

Do it right the first time and upgrade the speakers, wiring, and amp. It will make you much happier
