Well, a month ago an irresponsible 20 year old hit me head on. When I woke up and OnStar was talking to me I knew it wasn't pretty. Luckily I was in my new 2002 GMC 1500HD SLT Crew Cab 4x4! It was a total loss. So, while I'm hurtin I travel the web a bit. Now though, I think I have seen the light. I can buy an Avalanche! :0: I'm going to go test drive one tomorrow. ;D What will the family think? They just look like too much damn fun. I'll report back soon. Thank You to all who started this site.

WOW, there's a plug for all you guys wondering if Onstar is worth it...

Sorry to hear about the loss of a great truck :6:.
Hopefully things will go great with your Av test drive, and we'll be seeing a lot more of you around here ;D

Sorry to hear about the truck... You're GONNA LOVE THE AVY though. Great choice. Hope to see more of your posts and let us know what you think after your test drive.

Well, I have to admit that I was a bit nervous and apprehensive (I'm a pick up guy you see!) as I walked up to my salesman and told him that I was no longer leaning toward an HD pickup, but was actually interested in an Avalanche. It was funny and made me laugh later (like I came out of some closet or something)! :2: Later I soon realized that the Avalance IS a pickup. So, I'm still a pickup guy!

Needless to say that I'm impressed with the Avalanche after a test drive. I've studied the literature and find it hard to believe that I could smile so much! :D It is also hard for me to believe that the Avy is actually 2 ft shorter in length and wheelbase than my HD CC Shortbed. ??? Could it be? Needless to say I've seen the light. :-[

So, I'll be picking up my Avy next Tuesday! Thanks to everyone for contributing to an interesting website the pushed me over the edge. I really appreciate it!!!

Tiger, did you get a 2500 like you old truck or 1500?

I'm glad you were okay from that wreck.

Great choice in trucks dude. Welcome to the club! :B:

Well, a deal is pending. ?I needed a 2500 for the towing capacity, so the salesman is attempting a dealer trade here in town. ?I told my dealer where the vehicle was, but didn't want to change salesmen. ?He was great. :) ?

While the new features on the 2003's were enticing (Steering wheel controls mainly, I have a broken wrist from the accident) I really like the 2002's every bit as much and controls can be retrofitted if need be. ?There is an 03 TNF here on the lot, but the difference was minimal (Eg: I didn't even notice the cladding color change, etc...). ?Dealers here only have a half dozen or so in stock, so it was kinda slim pickings. ?The one I'm buying has been on the dealers lot only a month or so! ?Also (strange enough) the MSRP on a 2003 (per Edmunds.com) has risen for the vehicle I wanted...to the tune of nearly $3,000. ? ? Besides, I like the thought of owning the first year of a new Classic!

Hopefully my rig will be the only 2500 in the area that's available: (apply drool smiley here!)

2002 2500 4x4 8.1L with Black and Tan (like the beer!) dead cow bun warmers, convenience package, LRDiff, granny assist steps (want em?), 3.73 axle ratio, and sunny roof ? ?Why black? ?Well, because my dog looks better in black. ?He demanded it! ?

Mods? ?I REALLY need a tape deck (!), steering wheel controls (I'm one-handed for 2 more months!), and some ice for that built in cooler! :D ?If you ask me, an Avalanche comes "modded" directly from the factory. Especially compared to a standard pick-up.

Big thanks to everyone for contributing to this site! :B:

Great choice. I wanted to get the 8.1 too but at the time couldn't afford the extra $$$. You will love the AV. Now you mission is to avoid the dreaded MOD BUG. There are several evasive moves to learn. This BUG is fast and its bite lasts for a long long time. In fact, reports of people being bitten by the MOD BUG are widespread. This BUG has caused troubles with bank accounts, marriages, and blinded the logical thinking of many a person. So once again, avoid the MOD BUG at all costs!! ;)

Or don't....

MOD ON and CONGRATS ;D

congratulations, you're gonna love it. as for picking black cuz of your dog... you gotta respect a good friend's opinion right?

Welcome to the neighborhood! Sure glad you came out of what sounds like a nasty wreck OK - airbags and OnStar did their jobs!

Ya know we think that you made a good choice . . . enjoy your new Av!

Update:

Went by the dealer today to finalize everything. My Av was supposed to be there, but alas it was not. :C: I tested the salesman's patience with my full page of issues/questions! >:D

I added the following accessories:

Engine block heater (to be installed)
Battery warmer (Love to ski!)
Tape deck wiring harness (I saw GM's official memo!)
12 volt plug in (for the rear) - I'm thrilled with it.
Back seat cover (It seemed to fit well)

I skipped the following, but will add later:

Tape deck (they wanted $260+labor) :9:
Passenger seat mobile office (clever, but $200 is hi)
Tent (I want one!)

I was going to shop around. Boy, that accessory bug bit harder than I thought. And to think everyone was warning me about that other critter 'mod bug' that strikes after I get it home. I'm gonna wear some deep woods off! :B:

I have an Avalanche!!! :-[ ;D

Drove it around and (eventually) home yesterday. I've already conditioned the leather surfaces! Some friends just had to hop in (Toyota driving rubber neckers) and were actually giving it positive comments. :D

My neighbors walked over today (they never have for any of my other 4 trucks) and wanted to check everything out. It was very cool. It's hard to believe how much is packed into this vehicle.

Thanks again to all who helped answer the many questions!

Glad to here about your new rig Tiger! You are goning to  it!You seem to have a small dose of the mod bug already ;D,be carefull it only gets worse the more you hang out here and read up on things. Same deal here with my neighbours. They never came to check out any of my other rigs, but when I showed up with the Av, they all came over for inspection and test rides. It's a great ride so enjoy! :B:
