The Bloomington, Indiana Chapter's first event will be a cruise from Bloomington to French Lick, Indiana, Saturday June 19. (Day before Father's Day.)

WBS20Garden20and20Dome.jpg

We will group up beginning at 9 am at Sam's Wholesale Club, at the intersection of state highways 37 and 45 on the southwest side of Bloomington. (Sam's is on the soutwest side of the interchange.)

Our route to French Lick will take us down 37 to Bedford. From there we will take state highway 450 to Williams, Indiana, where we will jump to some scenic county roads, including crossing the second longest covered bridge in Indiana.

We plan on getting to West Baden Springs, Indiana in time to take in a noon tour of the 8th Wonder of the Architectural World, the West Baden Springs Hotel National Landmark. For 61 years it had the world's largest free spanned dome roof - it was finally surpased by the Astrodome in 1963. During the early part of the last century is was the place to be. It was a favorite vacation spot for Chicago mobsters as well as numerious celebrities. It was sold to the Jesuits for $1 after the depression and made into a seminary. It later was sold by the Jesuits to an educational institution and became a college, which one of my wife's cousins attended. In the 80's it was sold to a California real estate company which shortly thereafter went bankrupt. For over 10 years the property sat vacant and started turning into ruins. An exterior wall collapsed, exposing several floors of hotel rooms to the weather. In the 90's the California bankruptcy court which controlled the property during its quick demise turned the property over to a group which has been restoring it. Approximately 1/3 of it has now been restored. Costs for the tour are $10/adult, $5/teenager, $2/6-12 year-olds, free for 5 and under.

After the hour-long tour, we will travel on into nearby French Lick, and eat lunch at the French Lick Springs Resort and Spa. (This lunch will probably be at 1 pm or later. If that is later than the normal for you, be prepared and bring some snacks to eat before we start the Hotel tour.)

After lunch we will have about an hour and a half of free time. People can explore quaint French Lick, play putt-putt, explore the old train equipment at the Indiana Railway Museum (next door to the Resort and Spa), and/or hang out and show off Avalanche mods. I might bring one (or more) of our RC toys for racing anyone else who might be interested in "getting it on". Z66 Butch will be bringing copies of the computer Album and Screensaver he made with photos from last year's modding GTG he hosted, together with Avalanche songs by Supermobile, which we will be demoing during this free time.

At 4:00 we will go on the Indiana Railway Museum's Train Ride. The 1 and 3/4 hour trip goes through 20 miles of Hoosier National Forest, limestone rock-cuts and the 2200 foot Burton Tunnel, one of the longest railroad tunnels in the state. Costs for the train ride are $9/adult, $5 for kids 3 - 11, and free for under 3.

We should be rolling back towards Bloomington at about 6 pm, and get there about 8. Those not yet ready to call it a day can arrange to go somewhere to eat together. The wife and I are partial to Texas Roadhouse and Outback Steakhouse, both off of 37 one exit north of where we will be grouping up in the morning. Little Zagreb's is a favorite local streakhouse in downtown Bloomington. It shouldn't be much trouble to get into a Bloomington restaurant with most of the Indiana University students gone for the summer.

We hope to have many people join us on this cruise. Z66 Butch has promised to be there, so we're going to have at least 2 Avalanches, and hopefully many more. Please reply if you are planning to come. I will update this post to track our planned attendance, as well as indicate any changes to the above plans.

This sounds great! You can count on us to be there! I have not been on a train for years and then it was a much shorter ride that this. Do you know the name of that covered bridge or the location? There are many good websites online about covered bridges and maybe we can look it up and read up on the history of it before we go.

also a maybe. my grandson form florida will be here and i would love to take him on the gtg. he has already been to fl but if you are only 8 how much of the world have you really seen???

Smart_AV - great to see you coming. Will be good to see you again. Will have to show the wife some of your electronics. When she saw some of the modified Avalanches at the East Coast Regional last year there were some things that she saw that she insisted that I get for our AV. I hate it when that happens!!! ;)

TNAV and yelotrk - hope you both will make it. We'll save some room for you in the cruise line. My son will be 10 in a couple of weeks so there will likely be at least one other kid there close to your grandson's age yelotrk.

Z66 Butch - the bridge, according to my Indiana atlas, is referred to as the Williams Bridge, and is located southeast of Williams, Indiana. It is visible across some farmed bottom-land from the town of Williams, and I'm guessing to be about a mile and a half from the center of town as the crow flies. (Williams is a very small town. Seems to be best known for some boat ramps into the East Fork of the White River upstream from a dam on the river. When I drove through last weekend, it seemed to be a popular place for fishing.) The bridge is posted with a 5 ton weight limit. It is over 300' long, with a center support pier. During our cruise, I advise that each driver waits until the AV in front of him has gotten at least halfway across the bridge just to make sure that we don't overstress the bridge.

Williams is in my back yard.
I've been across that bridge many times.
:0:Instead of turning around once we have crossed the bridge, we could cut through the country and end up on hwy 50 near Huron. This would take us to Shoals, wich is where we would end up if we took 450 past Williams. Don't worry, I know the way. ;D

Main one,
Are you going to Paris?
After we show your wife the cool truck electronics, we can get her looking at some Home Theater goodies. >:D

See everyone soon.

Z66 Butch - great link. Yep, that is the bridge I crossed Sunday scouting out the route.

Smart_AV - don't worry, I wasn't planning on turning around after crossing the bridge. If we have more than 3 AVs on the cruise, turning around after crossing the bridge would have to be rather well orchestrated. Besides, there's some nice scenery south of there on the county roads, as I'm sure you are aware of. In fact, the route I have in mind puts us on more county roads after hitting US 50 near Huron. Basically, after hitting the covered bridge, our route will be at least 95% county roads until we are on the doorstep of West Baden Springs. The roads are in good shape so don't worry that we'll be driving on gravel. For an idea of the types of roads I'm talking about, the top picture in the link Z66 Butch provided above shows some roadway leading to the covered bridge, which is very representative of all of the county roads I have picked out for the portion of the cruise from Williams to West Baden Springs. In our convoy we won't be driving very fast anyway, and taking these roads will keep us from holding up traffic on the 2-lane US and Indiana highways in the area. We'll save that for the drive home! >:D

Unfortunately I am now pretty sure, as much as I hate to say it, that I won't be able to go to Paris. I'd love to be part of the Indiana group cruising down there, and I'm sure Earthquake will be hosting a great event. I'd like to see him again - haven't seen him since Butch's Modding GTG last year. However, family realities just make that a bad weekend for me to get away for a number of reasons. :cautious: I'd love to show the wife some of your cool home theater goodies, but that would just mean less money for Avalanche mods. :3: We all have to have priorities in life, and for me Avalanche mods fall in between family responsibilities and home theater. :B:

Hello,

Put me and family down as a maybe for now. Is a little close to the Niagara Falls GTG, but will do my best to attend this one.

It sounds like it will be fun.

I will keep an eye on this one.

Great!!! I've been down to Boonville a couple of times, the home of Dynatech and their SuperMaxx headers. Maybe someday I'll be able to have those on my AV.

Dynatech and afco had there annual car show on Saturday. It had a good turn out. The dynamaxx headers are nice they just seem a little pricey.

at the car show we got to walk around the plant and see how everything was made. It was cool to see all the stuff. I have some friends who work at the plant the said all the parts are top notch.

I say we plan on a cruise to Boonville for next year's Boonville auto show!!! :D

:B:My Wife, Grandson (2 yrs) and I may show up for the train ride. He loves trains (Choo Choo) almost as much as he loves Papaw Ray's Big Truck, along with my motorcycle, 4 wheeler and Jeep. We'll be coming out of Evansville, IN. :B:

Hey Main One,

I am trying to get that day off of work so the wife and I can come down. I've been to French lick a few times, Fishing mostly. I'll try to keep you posted if I have any luck trading the day with anyone at work.

Larry

Raychevy, Just_Jeepin and Stretch MFD, I'll add all of you to the maybe list. Hope to see you on June 19!!! :B:

Z66 Butch told me today to check this GTG out. It looks cool!

Put me on the maybe list and I'll give it some thought over the next few days.

David

I talked this GTG up at the Paris Landing GTG. Hope to get a few more to attend!

Add another Avalanche to your cruise, a red one. I plan to attend at this point. We are still trying to find someone to work for my wife so she can come also. It may be as many as four people total, me and three others.
