I recently hardwired my Vr3 back up cam to my overhead console and loved the idea of not having the wire plugged into my cigarette adapter. So, I decided to also hardwire my tom tom navigation the same way. I cut the wire open to find 3 wires in the power adapter, a white, red and black. I called my local car audio store and asked cause I was not sure about the white wire and was told to run constant power all I would need was the red and black. So I wired it up plugged it in then, POOF! After quickly disconnecting it I noticed next to the inlet for the plug it reads 5v WHOOPS. I guess I am poop outta luck due to own stupidity. Lesson learned.? :E:

Doh!  Sorry to hear that.  I use my GPS quit frequently and would be lost without.

Only had it for 3 months. Wife is gonna be pissed.

you could always throw out the safety card   but, it's better and safer than looking at maps while i drive sweetheart.

Would seem to me that it'd be smarter to ask the item's manufacturer vs. some yahoos at a local store.  Sorry to hear you learned the hard way :)

I think the chopped up power cord might be a real good indicator :)

uhhhh Mr. davey73, you wouldn't have happened to use a 12v on this GPS did you? ?It specifically says in the warranty that we don't cover such user errors ? ? ? ? ? ? ? :kidding:

I hard wired my Garmin by plugging the receptacle into a female receptacle that was hard wired and hidden under console ? No cutting or splicing necessary ?:D

oh nice.  my Garmin is plugged into the ciggy lighter, but the excess cords are behind the dash.  :D

Good chance it only blew a resistor or diode, find someone that can work on electronics, to take a look, might be a cheap easy fix.

It was a pretty big flash and a lot of smoke. My friend who owns the car stereo shop is a electrical engineer. Unfortunately, he was not there when I called. I'll have him look at it. I can always buy another and swap it out, but that's kinda shady, and I would be afraid I would get caught, the way my lucks running. :E:  :E:  :E:

Sounds like it might of blown something a little bigger.
Hopefully your friend can look into it.

Bad thing about electric things is that smoke makes them work, and it sounds like you let all the smoke out!

Heres a tip... Invest in an DVM (aka multimeter). You can get them for $10 or so. Next time you can check the voltage to make sure the same thing doesn't happen again. A DVM is a great diag tool.

A DVM won't help the case of not reading the 5v warning  :)

Where (what fuse) did you hard wire the female receptacle?

Thats what I get for not paying attention. Allthough the 5v is imprinted in the plastic and is very small.
