Gas Cap Retainer Cable Blues

I am having an annoying problem with my gas cap retainer cable. ?I know this is a minor problem, but almost everytime I fill up with gasoline, it is a 2 handed job getting the gas cap screwed back on. ?If I don't hold the gas cap retainer cable with my left hand and turn the gas cap with my right hand, then the cable retainer binds against the gas cap and I can't tighten the gas cap enough to fully close it. ?All my current and past GM vehicles that had/have this retainer cable caused me no problem at all.

I replaced the stock cap with a locking one without a retainer cable. I just place the cap on the handhold for temporary storage. Gets rid of the silly cable and prevents predatory environmentalists from doing any damage.

No problems with my cable........

I am trying to picture your problem.....maybe your cable is kinked or something??

Hmm, no problem here.

On my first fill up, after unscrewing the gas cap, it just fell to the ground. The tab that held the cable to the truck was messed up somehow. I just pushed it back in with my thumb and it's held eversince (I'm just a little more careful). I don't have any problems putting the cap back on though.

I know what you mean about the binding problem. I had the same thing when I first got my truck. I now can use 1 hand to put the cap back on. I let the cable loop on the top side of the cap and then use one finger to hold it in place the the rest of my fingers to turn the cap. Lately, I've been able to turn the cap just right and the cable doesn't bind. The cable is still positioned across the top of the cap.

Reminds me, how many customer's does it take to turn on the gas ca.........

I have to agree with MI_99XPL.

After the first couple of trys I was able to master it with one hand.

Still not as easy as it should be. :cautious:

I never had any problems with mine ;D, but maybe you can very carefully but some silicon or some type of lubricate where the loop goes around the cap. If you do this be very careful not to use to much or get any in the tank filler hose. It's just an idea :0:, I've never tried this so I don't know if it will work or not, just brain storming here. Now my head hurts from having to think :2:

after about14 months, and 75-100 trips to gas station, no problems, but gotta look at cable, setup,

i always get it started going back on with left thumb, and never had it hang up yet.

Why don't we just snip that cheap little plastic wire off and do it like the old days? I can see why it would irritate some owners. This is one mod I won't have a problem doing!!

The following was posted in another thread when I couldn't find this one. Now that I found it, I'll put it here.

I know this was discussed before (in the last couple of weeks) but I can't find it. :6:

I remember it because I have never had a problem with it, until I read that post! The next day I got gas, and wouldn't you know it, I had trouble with that dang tether hanging up! :8:

Lubrication may be an answer, but make sure that it is something that is compatible with the plastic and won't attack it over time. Powdered graphite might be good.

But before you do that, you might want to make sure it is clean and there isn't a layer of salt, sand, or other dirt in the tether's groove gumming things up.
