Hi everyone. I did do a search for this but found more answers on what to use if you had mods done. For everyday driving(no towing etc) what octane are all of you using? Can you use 87 in the Avalanche. My commute to work is about 1/2 hour each way and I would say I spend about 20 minutes on the highway and then 10 doing city driving. What octane does everyone use/recommend? Thanks! ;D

I'm pretty sure that 87 octane is the recommended octane for "normal" driving. I haven't heard of any convincing reason to use anything higher. Check to see what the owner's manual says, also.

I think 11H has made some interesting comments about the differing quality of different gas companies' 87 octane. I believe he buys 87 octane but from only a couple of different national chains.

I have never used anything but 87 octane. No problem at allin 20,000 miles... no valve ping, plenty of power and decent mileage.

Same here. Unlike my '99 4.8 and '01 5.3 which both pinged on hard acceleration.

USE 87 ......engines designed for 87......

Use 87 octane unless you want to spend more money for NO GAIN... Unless of course, you've updated the engine performance to run at 91 octane.... Hypertech programmer etc...

The Avalanche owner's manual says 87. Conventional wisdom is that the only reason to go higher is if you start experiencing pinging or knocking.

Certain cars do recommend high octane (see Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.7 H.O. engine)
