Gas Mileage For The 8.1

W

GUEST
Looking at purchasing my first Av. Considering the 8.1 in the 2500 4x4. What type of mileage are others getting?? Thanks in advance... :B:

Wolfman, try using the search function using keywords "gas mileage". I seem to remember a couple of the folks commenting on seeing mileage in the mid 15's on the road with the 8.1L. At least one of them was the 4x4 version.

I have a 2wheel 2500 and just made a trip from Sacto to LA (about 410 miles) and made it just barely on 1 tank of gas. So figure a 37.5 gal tank goes into 410 about 11mpg. OUCH! all freeway and 87oct gas. I did an average of about 80 all the way (hey I wasn't the only one!). I ran it until the LOW FUEL light came on and then +20 miles so I don't know how much reserve fuel might have been left that would have helped these numbers....

wolfman, Have a 2500 8.1 4x4...Been gettin 10 mpg city and 13 plus on the highway @ 75-80. Seems to be getting better each fill up, 7000 miles so far. Longest trip to date 475 miles on 36.5 gals = 13.01 mpg. Most fuel on a fill up 38.5....musta been on fumes 36.0 to 37.0 the norm..

Hope to improve with future mods...
Great SUT you"ll love it.... :B:

I have a 4 x 4 2500, no preformance mods. I do have larger tires (265/75 - 16 BFG AT/KO) and the 4.10 diff. I am getting about 9 mpg around town (Las Vegas - stop and go to work and lots of heat - AC on full). On the road not pulling anything going about 75 mph I get about 11 mpg. I pulled a 20' camp trailer to the beach in CA - lots of head wind and hills - no problem pulling 65 to 75. Gas mileage was about 8 mpg. I am running Mobile 1 (5w - 30) and only have about 5,000 miles on my truck. I love the big block, but it is thirsty. Cheers - Jim

I have the 8.1 4X4 and get around 9 in city. I just drove from LA to Fresno and used the cruise control most of the way (drove at night) @ 73 mph and got 13.0 I have only 3600 miles so far and maybe it will get better. I do run full synthetic oil.

2500 4X4 4.10's ;D

Get from 11.25 to 12.0 around town :(
13.5 to 14.5 out on the road Air always on.
Not towing.

I have a 2500 4X4 with a 4:10 rear end. I pull a 5000 lb 22ft bassboat routinely in Kansas where it is very flat. I average 10 mpg with or without the boat and I am a conservative driver. But, hey, V8 engines are not engineered for fuel economy, If fuel economy is important steer clear (no pun intended) of any vehicle offering a V8. You'll love your Avalanche! :) The 496 is a towing machine!

Almost 27,000 miles and I've averaged 9.8mpg. 8,000 of those miles have been pulling trailers. Worst mileage was 7.4mpg on a hilly road running 75-80mph into a 40 mph headwind pulling a 24ft inclosed car hauler loaded to about 8,000lbs. Man you could almost see the gas gauge needle moving. I have gotten as high as 14.5 mpg on a tankfull. If you ever plan to pull a trailer you will love the 8.1.

2500, 4x4, 8.1, 4.10, lead foot

I keep records of all gas purchases. The cumulative mpg since new is 11.2. Some light towing and hwy trips at 75-85.
