Hey, just wanted to find out what octane gas is suggested for the AV. Since I STILL don't have mine I don't know and with the gas prices around here was just wondering. Our Grand Cherokee does not use the highest priced stuff, hoping the AV doesn't either. Anyone know what the hell is going on with the prices?!!? I mean, we own Iraq now for god's sake....maybe we should beat the hell out of someone and start pumping oil.

I've never used the premium, but some people do just for the higher octane and cleaner burn. Isnt necessary but could improve your mileage. I just put the hypertech III in mine so I will start using the higher grade and probably driving less...oh well

Same here, I normally use just the regular unleaded. If I am doing a long trip then I will put in some premium and add some octane booster from the store. But it runs just fine on regular.

To answer your question...the recommended gasoline for the Av is regular unleaded 87 octane...according to the owner manual.

When I picked mine up from the dealer (Feb 04 a Z-71 WBH), the dealer was very specific in telling me to use 87 Oct. It was part of their speil when they turned the truck over to me, as I did not inquire as to which gas to run in it. They said it was Tuned to use 87 for gas.

I have always burned the "good" stuff. However after reading the many posts on this I will use the 87 oct. from now on. The posts on octane by 805engineer and others explained why I should not be using the 91 stuff.

Here is a thread that has links to other gas grade threads.....

I believe in Colorado they have 85 octane gas...most states don't allow gas with that low of an octane. I used 85 octane when I was in Colorado and it seemed to work fine.

My dealer said that the truck will adjust to whatever octane you put in...his advise was not to switch fuel grades frequently and that 87 octane is just fine.

Using higher octane than 87 on a stock AV is doing nothing except lining someone's pocket. Simplified, octane ratings measure how easily the gas will ignite. Higher octane is less easily ignited. When an engine has a higher compression ratio - 10.5 to 12. The higher octane gas is needed to keep the fuel from self igniting under the higher pressure. You want the igniting only to happen when the spark plug fires not sooner! This self igniting is called detonation and is heard as a knock. This can damage an engine if severe. Save your money and buy 87.

Yeah, there seems to be a general misconception that higher octane=better performance. It's the other way around. The lower octane you can use without predetonation (pinging) is the best.
