I read a posting on another site questioning the adaptibility of the Trip Computer found on the Denali and Escalade. It is mounted in the upper storage compatment above the rear view mirror.

I would love to get instant fuel economy and tank usage in my AV. Anyone have any info on this modification?

Jason has looked into this, and I got the impression it could be done, but would be involved and pricey. The posts are around somewhere. Does our site have a search function?

Yes, the site has a search function - look at to frame - you need to specify days - default +7 which is a tad limited.

Best post GMTC - Escalade retrofit - not very encouraging, but you may want to check back later or track it. ;D

Ahh, another expensive mod, feed my addiction! I would also be able to eliminate yet another annoying cubby (already filled my "onstar cubby" with neet-o switches for other mods, and filled my "slot-above-the-cd-storage-area-cubby" with a GM tape deck, and now for that silly little cubby above my rear view mirror! To me, cubby holes scream ?out that an option is missing. like the rear seat audio option (available for other GM SUVs) that results in the useless cubby facing the rear seat passengers.

here is what the computer looks like from the Escalade:

computer is $348 at GMPD, Dal is probably cheaper

and here is another link to another board that has useful postings on this topic, G-man's post is also very helpful:

http://forums.pickuptruck.com/showf...2&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=1&vc=1

I am advised that most of the wiring can be accomplished into the radio harness (recall the radio has a speed sensor based feature). But I have not ventured here yet, will report back if I go for it.

The Unit may be $348 but what about all the other devises that are needed. I am sure our gas tank doesn't have the necessary sensors to tell how much gas we have left or how much MPG we are getting. I always wondered why the trip computer did not come with the Avy. It seems like a common sense item.

Powrsurge: I was in the dealership not to long ago with my av at first oil change and the mechanic i use hooked up their little thingy that plugs under the dash where the HPP3 also plugs in.
He plugged in to check all my functions , fuel pressure,,,i cannot even remember all of them, but one thing that it did show was i had like 19.8 gallons at the time he was checking everything. It must be built in somehow because the computer nows how much i had while we were sitting there. Kind of like the temp gauge for the denali dash insert. the tempature sensor is there we are just not using it.

yes, obviously not all of the wires are fed from the radio, other connectins must be made - the two other board links go into this a bit, but as the G-man said the guy who claims he did it successfully has not provided complete info yet as to the wiring. as much as I hate bugging him, I think Jason P has some info on this, will abide by my promise to report back

Jackalanche, I feel your pain, my man. I too can't stand any holes. I feel like I bought a base model vehicle with no bells and whistles.

Please keep us (me) informed as you proceed.

BTW - Do you have pics of your Onstar hole now filled?

I don't have any of mine handy but I can easily link to one that shows you exactly what it looks like as you fill the four switch pods up:

auxlamps.jpg

that's (CAFC member) Chevy4x4truck's Silverado, we all share the same dash. He also has a nice little step by step guide on his site on the four pod housing. I just have two aux lamps switches in mine for now, (top left and bottom left pods used) and I have the airbag deactivation switch shown in hand but not installed as I have not tackled the wiring yet. If you don't have Onstar, you get awarded with a cubby (with a neat little mat in the bottom!) that easily snaps out, you would need to snap in the four-pod housing, that part # is 15040484. covers for unused pods come five to a pack, part # 15734687. The aux lamps switches come in left or right side configuration, there is a difference and you want the writing to appear face up.

Even if you do have Onstar, you have room in the unused space below the switch for aux lamp switches, etc.

Jackalanche,

What are your aux lamps switches connected to?

P.S. - Do you have a part number for the switches?

Aux lamp switch #1 is for my black magic Hellas up front (note the 100 watt H2 bulbs  )

Aux lamp switch #2 is for the freakin rear light install that I am trying to figure our - it WILL happen - I wired it up when I had the dash bezel off a few weeks back.

the left side switches are GM part #15722980 - $14.64 at GMPD but for some reason they add a wicked shipping charge on this item, even by their standards (I have used them a lot so I am aware of their S&H is a profit center mentality) so go with Dal on it.

Ok,

I have been bugged that the trip computer was not included so now I am all excited to see this.

I hope we get to to read the detailed write up. This would be a good item for the monthly Magazine.

SoCal71-

Disregard my previous post...just noticed you are looking for the Aux Switch diagram....

Sorry,

John

That's easy to answer, and once again I cribbed off of someone else - Jason Pendlum our Savior. (Seriously he has done more for Avy owners than most other guys - support him with your business). On his personal Silverado Z71 site - http://users2.ev1.net/~jpendlum/ , he has a link to a "rear light install" document, and the guy describes A - F of the aux lights switch (albeit in a dual solenoid scenrio). I would be happy to list them for you also, the dash lighting is the one that I went away from Jason on - since I had the bezel off, I simply pulled the cargo / fog light combo switch and tied into one of the the two grey wires there - I could pull the bezel again and list the connections for the aux light switch in a few days, business travel coming up. You will also need the female plug, and Jason has advice on where to get that too. :D

by the way, someone could also track down the right side aux lamp switch if that is required by your situation, I have seen it listed around here somewhere.

John or Jackalanche,
I appreciate your help with this matter. I think Jason's description is good but more thatn hwat i"m looking for . I would like to know which pin is the following:
Ground
Illumination
Signal out to lights (relay)
Accesory
etc.

Thanks again for your help.

Back to the trip computer, will it even fit in the overhead console area of the AV? I took a look this morning, and the one in my friends Jimmy looks too tall to fit in the sunglasses pocket space of the AV.
Would like to put one in as well, but gotta save up money. They are real expensive (>500 CDN). Yikes!

Since the overhead console in the Avy is the same as the one in the Suburban (without the trip comp) I would think that you should just be able to go to the dealer and have them install it for you. I would rather have pros do it than myself.

Keep in mind that where we have a cubby hole, the Suburban has rear air controls. I would love to put the trip computer up there too but I am also not convinced that it will fit.

It does look quite tall. Perhaps replacing the entire console is required?

you're right about the size issue - the escalade locates the unit in their (different) center console, above the CD storage door - the picture I posted earlier had the computer installed in an overhead console from a Silverado HD - which is deeper than ours inthat area. Iam going to swing by the caddy dealer tomorrow and measure the face of the computer.

but check this link out, this guy has takena ton of action photos of the unit, it is not very deep at least:
