Grinding coming from rear left brake

A grinding noise is coming from my rear left brake now.  This just started happening yesterday on my way home from work.  With the windows up, it sounds like an airplane passing overhead when I hit the brakes.

What needs to be replaced?

Parking brake?

New pads...?
anything..

have to remove tire and inspect

I just did a full brake job on my '02. Once under warranty the dealer replaced the parking brake shoes. Last summer I started getting a ?slight noise coming from the rear brakes, it sounded like something was loose in there. The brakes worked fine and I was sure it was that parking brake again. When I changed the rear rotors I had planned on taking out the parking brake all together, I have NEVER applied that brake in 5 years of driving! I was sure that it had fell apart and was wore out again but when we got in there there was nothing wrong with it at all! The cooling fins on the rear rotors were rusted bad and about half gone! I now think that some large pieces of rust had fell down into the parking drum making that noise. It has nothing to do with your story so I guess this is a ?:jacked:..............just wanted to share.

Just had mine do the same...rear pads and rotors. Had some grinding afterwards too being the e-brake was making noise also(it's common).

How many miles you get out of them?? I ended up with 97000 miles on the rear brakes. I was impressed.

I had a really stubborn rock lodge itself between the pad and dust shield on my left rear brake of my 03 Av.  It made the sound you describe.  What I did to fix it was drive backwards and then forwards a few times and it came loose.  I hope it's not too serious because I need to do my rear brakes and I'm finding it can get expensive.

mine cost $300, including park brake pads...from local parts stores.  I did it myself in 2 hours...of course had the dealer "break loose" the bolts for me.  My rear brakes lasted 88,000

Please let us know the outcome. Thanks!

Just got a call from the dealer.  They said I needed new rears.  The quoted me $614 for just the rears.

Between dropping my truck off at the dealer and getting the phone call, I ran into someone who referred me to a shop right around the corner from my house.  I called them before I got the call from the dealer just to find out how much it would be if I got new rears or all new brakes.  They quoted me $228 for new rears and $450 for everything.  As soon as I got off the phone with the dealer, I called the local shop and made my appointment.  I sure am glad I found out about them.

sounds like a pretty good deal

228 sounds high to me for rear only..

pads cost about $20-$40 for the whole axle...

While I don't know how much they should cost, $228 is for new pads and rotors and the labor to install them.  I could hear the guy on the computer looking up prices as I talked to him.

But, hey, even if it is high, it's not as high as the dealer's $600.

wakebrdr,

You & I are from the same town.
For my '02, the dealer quoted me nearly $600 for rear brakes & parking brake.  I went to a tire shop and they quoted me $240 + tax for the same service.  Maybe not the OEM brake parts,  but the price difference is substantial!
:E:

avalgal,

Do you still live here?  Send me an email at wakebdr32 at yahoo dot com.  I'd love to talk with you about where you get your truck serviced, tires, etc. around here.

rotors about $25 each.

just trying to give you an idea of what things cost.

So for new rotors (not always needed) and pads per axle is roughly $75-100 in parts....

about a 2 hour job might read less in shop labor guide....

That is my Parking Brake Mod that list in my Sig

The bolt that holds the spring clip snapped off when I was replacing my shoes. The only way to drill and tap it out would be to pull the rear axle. I didn't feel like doing that so I took out all the parts and put them in a box up on a shelf. The next time I change the fluid in the rear diff I might pull the axle and fix it. But like you I never used it and from the reports I have read it doesn't hold the truck anyhow.

sounds about right to me, assuming the doing "everything"  I was quoted $525 to do it all, then extra $45 to include my intermediate steering shaft.  Hopefully I can do my sterring next week.

I would like to know the shop you went to as well.  I'm in Atlanta and work up in Roswell off Mansell Road.

Sorry, I forgot to check this thread for more posts.

For all those interested, the shop is Hamby's in Cumming, GA.  Their website is http://www.hambysinc.com/ and they are located at 5790 Dahlonega Hwy  Cumming, GA 30040.

I was treated very well by the staff there and my truck has been perfect since I picked up it.

If anyone decides to give them some business, ask for Adam.  He's the guy that helped me out and was as nice as he could be.

Oh yeah, almost forgot.  My final bill was about $255 which is a little more than the $228 he originally quoted me, but I wasn't going to argue since they saved me almost $400 compared to the dealer.
