Hauling a portable generator

I use my 2004 2500 to tow a travel trailer and I'm considering the purchase of a portable generator for use when dry camping. I'm wondering if it is safe to haul the generator (with gasoline in the tank) in the bed of the Avalanche. Also, would it be safe to carry extra fuel for the generator in the bed of the avalanche. My concerns are gasoline fumes getting into the passenger compartment when driving with the top of the bed closed up. Also concerned about crash safety. Is anyone doing this? What are your thoughts and experience?

I do not see why not...the cabin gets fresh air from front....

Now I would not haul gas with midgate down.....

I've hauled my small E?1000 in the rear by the tailgate. I removed the back panel and tucked a tarp between it and the middle one (careful with the rivet holes as to not pinch them in there) . Then dropped the tarp down and back, setting the generator and dirtier things in that area that also helped hold the tarp in place. There's a gap under the gutters that I poked folds of the tarp into.
No fumes inside that I smelled anyway, as I dropped the midgate first when I set up camp. When I dropped the tailgate, I smelled some but nothing much; just be careful (in the drier areas especially) for static sparks. You have plastic on rubber that can generate that.

Get a big battery, a big solar cell and an inverter!

Hmmm, attempt #3 to post this!
"You are not allowed access to this section" HUH!!? ???

generator and gas can in back of mine...probably not exactly what you had in mind, though, and I only hauled it about 1/2 mile with the back open like you see it :)

I have hauled a small portable generator and gas can around town. It spent most of the day in the back of the truck, and I spent about an hour or so of that time driving. When I opened the tailgate, there was a pretty strong smell of gas. Inside the cab, I'm not sure if there was a hint of gas smell, or if I was imagining things because I was paranoid.

After I took the gas and generator out, the back of the bed still had that gas smell for a couple of days.

If your trailer has an vented outside accessible storage compartment, that might be a better place for the generator and gas can. That way you can be a little more at ease with it.

I haul my generator and anywhere up to 20 gallons of gas in the bed of my avalanche when I tow my toy hauler out to remote places and have never had gas probs :)

Hauled 2 five gallon cans of gas from Buffalo, NY to Orlando FL and back, No problems.

Took my Craftsman 3500 watt generate and one 5 gallon can with me on a weekend trip 300 miles, No problem.

Went to gas station to fill 2 five gallon cans and on the way back one tipped over. You could smell it in the cab. Stopped and this time straped it down.

I treat the back of my truck as a truck, so a little gas spilled did not bother me.
