OK, with all my lighting mods starting to add up  amp-wise, I am looking at a heavier duty alternator. One place I found is http://www.4alterstart.com/ and they have provided the following advice on their alternator options for a 5.3L Av:

"The ad244 unit fits your Avalanche. I have the 130 amp in 100% factory new for $199.99. I have the 200 amp for $249.99. Requires 4 gauge power cable, $25.00. $20.00 to ship it Ups ground service or $30.00 to ship it Ups 3 day select air.
Thanx!
Regards,
Patrick

By the way, we 1500 Av owners have a 105 amp alt stock from GM. I may go with the 130 amp unit. If I had a winch for the Av, would not even think twice about it.

thought my post would smoke you out on this topic g-man! Thanks for the valuable info . . .

You may want to do some more checking - it is important to consider idle current production

Did somebody say power? AuraGen

This product addresses the idle current production and more. They have great information on their site:
"The AuraGen G5000 and G8500 Power Induction Systems

The AuraGen is a maintenance-free power induction system developed by Aura Systems, Inc. that turns a vehicle into a mobile power generation system. The G5000 produces 5kW of power and the G8500, 8.5kW. Each generates clean 60 Hz AC power suitable for use with sensitive electronic equipment.

The AuraGen provides mobile power for utilities, municipalities, contractors, telecommunications, fire/police/rescue, farmers, recreation, service vehicle operators, or any users that need power on the job. In addition we offer a Manual Transfer switch which allows the AuraGen to power up your home or business during power outages. The system can be configured with either 120/240 VAC 20-amp circuit or a 120 VA 40-amp circuit. A remote power strip in either voltage configuration is also available for hard-to-reach places and rugged terrain. For added convenience and safety, a keyless remote start is also an available option.

Available Configurations: Auragen configurations that produce DC power only, a combination of AC & DC power, and an inverter battery charger."

It is my understanding the military is gearing up to make these standard equipment on a huge percentage of their vehicles.

Helmet, you have been walking on the wild side again, that thing is 12" x 6" + the control panel that is as big as a bread basket - wow! You are really serious about your creature comforts!

Any idea idea what this "system" costs? ;D

Yes, unfortunately it's around $5,000 installed. If they roll out production like I've been told they will, the price should really come down.

I want one, but I will probably do a supercharger first.

You know.... priorities.

you guys are nuts!

All I need is a staight swap, bolt on HD alternator to address a percieved need for more amps than the 105 currently put out by the stock unit. Maybe G-man is right about going for a 200 amp unit, but as for the ability to provide a power source for my local high school's Friday night football games, fagettaboutit!

Based on the size of the unit you will have to make a choice between them, cause only one will fit. ;D

Yeah, ain't it great, take a hard look at 200 amp double rectifier, seems real tough. ;D

I like the look of that 200 amp alternator, although "double rectifier" does sound a bit kinky. ;D

Top of the list for me lately has been the dual electric fan. How crucial do you think it would be to upgrade the alternator when I install the fan? Could I wait awhile? Would July and August put to much strain on it?

After the AuraGen post you write "kinky", oh my...

I would absolutely upgrade the alternator before the fan install - hell, April is straining my AC
