I am looking for a hitch mounted bike rack for up to 4 bikes. What bike racks have worked well for you? Any suggestions on which one to buy. Is the one GM sells a good one?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Dave

Dave,

I have a hitch mounted rack from Thule. It has room for 4 bikes but I have only had up to 3 bikes on mine. I've had it for 3 years now, I used to use it on my wifes Blazer and on my Silverado. I have no complaints with it.

I have the GM hitch mounted bike rack, mostly because I wanted the GM hitch mounted ski rack, and THAT required me to get the GM hitch mounted bike rack.

are you following me so far?

anyway, I have not used the GM H-M bike rack to carry bikes yet, but I can tell you it is of sturdy, well-made design and would appear to be up to the task.

The best bike rack is the Sport Works bar none. I have tried just about all of them and this is the best easy.

Very much like what a bus might have only better. Checkout http://www.sportworks.com

It locks to teh hitch and very strong, I have the 4 bike model and race mountain bikes, and this is bar far the best rack I HAVE EVER OWNED

I have a Yakima roc n gate. I love it, hitch mounted and still access the bed of the AV. Great when traveling and need to get something out the back you just swing the bikes out of the way.
>:D

Saris T-Raxx or BAT rack. They are great and run normally under 200.

I just ordered an Allen Deluxe Swing Away 4 Bike Carrier for 2" Hitch from Costco... $199 plus shipping. URL to order is here

The reason I got this one, is that it is very similar to the Yakima Swing Away, but half the price. Reviews I read on it were pretty positive. I will be able to keep my bikes on it and still open back gate of my Av.

I have an old (2000 model) sportsworks...same bike carrier that most city busses have. It is by far the best rack i have ever owned or used. Sportsworks no longer makes them for personal use (only the commercial ones for busses, etc...) and sold the patent to Thule...it's a little different (but still a great rack)... I have 3 friends with the new version by Thule and no one we know ever had any problems with them. Sometimes it does pay to spend a little extra.

Here's a link to the two bike model: http://www.thuleracks.com/product.asp?dept_id=8&sku=916

you can also add one or two more for a total ability to carry 4 bikes. The new style also accomodates tires wider than 2.5 inches (which is tougher on my rack.

Good luck!

I just bought this carrier.  After seeing the rear of all the vans/truck that were beat up from ggetting hit with the bikes on the carriers that the bikes hang on, I just couldn't see me getting one like that.  I opted for one that the bike wheels actually set in and are clamped in place.

After talking to you about it, researching on my own and seeing the battle scars from other carriers, this one just seemed to work best for me (and will hopefully save my paint).  pix and a review to follow after it gets here.

I ordered a rack from www.rackbiz.com in July 2003.  I think its was called the GlideAWAY 4-Bike Carrier.  I use it extensively in the summer time.  I've had up to 4 bikes on it.  I like it because it can glide away from the tailgate (while fully loaded) so you can open the tailgate.  Its gotten a little rusty over the years but so far, its held up well.

Note.  When buying a hitch mount bike rack you need to make sure your bike(s) will mount on it properly.  Some mountain bikes will not fit.  I noticed if you use the adaptor for these types of bike, sometime the front wheel of the bike will hang below the bottom of the truck.  If the wheel hits the ground, it will mess up your bike.

I hate bringing up old threads.. but thought my two cents would help.

I have a Yakima Kingpin, fits four bikes.  Originally got it for my Colorado, but works even better for my Av.  The only drawback is if I want to use a tent for the bed, I'd have to remove the bike and rack to lower the tailgate.
