HOOD OPEN message on DIC - and it's messing up my alarm

Today I went to remote-start my truck as I put on my boots this morning. It chirped a 'bad' beep back at me.  I tried it again and the alarm started going off (not nice for the neighbors at 6am)

I got into the truck and saw "HOOD OPEN" msg on my DIC.

WHERE is the sensor located that tells the truck whether the hood is open or not?  I want to check to see if it's just jammed (jammed OPEN would be weird though) or if something has come unplugged.

??

I didn't know that! (From the Original "Laugh In") Will this get moved now to the Old Guys Thread? I wasn't trying to threadJack.

And I had no idea that it existed either.

Thanks for the heads up!

Hey that's what the manual said, I did not know it had them either.

Thanks everyone!!

Yah from a visual inspection, I can't see anything amiss.  I guess I'll have to take it in for service (yet again...)  :(

Turns out it's some sort of electrical problem with the latch, and they have to put in a whole new latch, and it's over $200    :(

Separate electrical and mechanical systems in the mechanism......the electrical connector to the open/closed switch can be unplugged leaving the hood latch operational....depending upon whether the electrical switch is normally open or normally closed, the connector can be left off or the connections shorted to simulate a closed hood and prevent the DIC signal

I'm getting a "HOOD OPEN" msg sometimes.

Dealership said it's an electrical fault with the sensor with the hood latch.

They wanted $220 for a new one (whole latch assembly). I got a new one for $50 from an online site.

Problem: I can't UNPLUG the current sensor because the cord goes back behind the grill and is somehow mounted back up in there.

I have a push bar on my truck, of which the top part mounts up onto my grill mounts, and the bottom underneath where my tow hooks where.

Question: is the only way to access my hood latch sensor (to unplug it and plug in the new one) to remove my entire push bar and entire front end of the truck?  Am I missing something??

May just find it easier to cut the wires and splice the new sensor on without getting to the connector.

What year truck is this on?

My alarm is not tied into the hood at this time and if there is a connection there I should tie into it.
Since I am assuming this is a positive trigger and the alarm is likely using a negative trigger for the hood/trunk triggers I will need a relay but still.
Mine is an '03

But if the fault is in the connector....

:(

Although it MIGHT be in the sensor itself, because a car audio guy I know says that you can just unplug it to stop the HOOD OPEN msgs from coming up.  Maybe I can just snip the cord.  (I'd hate to be wrong and have a PERMANENT hood open msg, completely disabling the ability to use my alarm)

My alarm just uses the computer code of the hood's state I believe, to monitor the hood (and tailgate).

I ordered the $50 hood latch (with sensor).  Dealership wanted $220.  I was going to do it myself - I got the hood latch off easy (3 bolts) but the part where the sensor wire clips in to the truck is back underneath and behind the grill, and there's NO way to get to it with human hands, so I'm booked in (different dealership) to have it replaced.

IN THE TIME BEING...

Question: can I just SNIP that wire on the hood latch, and it will disable any HOOD OPEN msg from appearing?  OR... will it give me a permanent HOOD OPEN msg  (???)  The  HOOD OPEN msg is intermittent.  Comes on every once in awhile.  But I can't arm my alarm like that because my alarm monitors my hood, and if the HOOD OPEN msg comes in the middle of the night, it sets off my alarm.  I can't even use the door lock inside the truck to lock all doors because THAT turns on the factory alarm, which does the same thing when the HOOD OPEN msg appears (sets off the factory alarm making the truck honk and honk).

Does anyone know how the truck gets the HOOD OPEN msg?  Will cutting that wire just disable it?  Or will it give me a permanent HOOD OPEN msg ?

If cutting the wires doesn't disable it I suspect shorting them will.

I was told by a car audio tech (who does tons of car electrical stuff as well, and who owns a Suburban) that simply unplugging it will stop the code from occurring.  So since I can't REACH the connection where it plugs in to the truck wiring, I thought just snipping the wire on the hood latch do the same?

The problem with it is that it MIGHT give me a CONSTANT hood open msg (as I previously mentioned).  So, if I can't figure out a way to short it properly, I'd really be in a jam.

Anyone know of someone I could call who's 'in the know' with this particular part?

When see the sensor you are going to find it has 3 wires. Dont cut the wires or tie them together

Ok, so do not cut anything.  Got it.   From that diagram it looks like an open part of the circuit is what sends the msg (close circuit required to read 'hood closed') which I assume cutting the wire, would leave a permanent 'hood ajar' msg.

So what could be causing the hood open msg?  (just looking for ideas here)

Is there a FUSE that could be pulled that would disable the message?

It'll [hopefully] be fixed by Sat. afternoon but I'm in and out of the truck throughout the day for work, each day.  And I have to manually walk around to all 4 doors and push the door locks down each time I leave it.  It's more of a real pain in the arse right now than anything else.

I don't see a fuse for it, it is wired directly to the BCM. Looks like the sensor is bad to me.

I was hoping to catch you before you did that.

Sorry, DarkSky. I assumed it was a two wire thingy. My bad.

Big thanks to you guys!  You've both been a big help and I really appreciate the responses!  I know something like this is very isolated/localized, and I wasn't expecting any replies at all!

Cheers!

(I'll post again in this thread IF/when it's fixed - with the luck I have, I'll only find out that it's a deeper-rooted problem   )

Had it in the shop this afternoon - new $50 latch (with sensor) installed.  30mins labor charged (50 bucks).  Not bad!

So far so good.  It was an intermittent problem so only time will tell.  Thanks to all for your help!
