I have a friend that has a 2003 SOM Avalanche Z71 WBH and I don't know how to get the bow tie off it is different then my cladded AV

I just did this earlier today so it's fresh.
FIRST: Take the light assembly out with the pin thingy. This gives you more ratchet room.
SECOND: Take a 10mm socket and loosen the two bolts holding the bowtie.
And there ya go!! GOOD LUCK. :) :D

Get small (1/4" drive) ratchet with 10mm socket.

With one hand hold the hood latch over to one side. With your other hand you reach down into that hood latch opening and remove or loosen the two nuts. They thread themselves onto the plastic posts of the bowtie. Finish removing by hand so you can catch the nuts and you don't find yourself trying to fish them out of the parts below.

No removal of headlights or anything. Yeah, if you have HUGE hands, you may need to bring flowers and ask your wife to do it I guess.

It has to be a deep well socket. I don't have one deep enough, so I had to take the radiator cover off to have more wrenching room. Never thought about taking a light out. Have to check that out. I noticed my "Scowl" bowtie doesn't have as much "bow" to it. It's flatter, so doesn't fit quite as well as the OEM. Had to draw down a little harder on the nuts to get it to fit tight.

Don't know exactly what you call it, but the plastic cover by the hood latch hole comes off. This is the cover that is between the radiator and the grill. Pry up on the center of the plastic push rivets that hold it down and they will come off. You then have all of the room you want to work. I think the 2 nuts holding the bowtie are 10mm. You will need a deep socket. Did mine in 5 minutes.

P.S. I have fat little hands and this gives you plenty of room to work.

It is so easy just to remove the shroud. The push rivets pop out and back in with ease. This way you will have a clear view of the back of the bowtie and all you need are pliers. Be careful not to over tighten the new bowtie, you will crack the plastic post and be SOL.

Great advice on removing headlight. I don't know if all are the same, but my 2003 Z-66 WBH was a piece of cake. Headlight took about 1 minute to remove. And I had the 10mm socket ready to go. All in all, it took me less than 15 minutes to replace my bowite.

Ok, I put my new 'Tie on yesterday, Very easy. I went the remove the black schroud way. the pins come out very easily and re install with no problem. That's what I was mainly concerned with since I had never done it before. I got a black 'Tie with the Mountain AV logo in Chrome from Les. over the past three days I've done that, installed a new Westin Bull Bar and installed Stainless Steel Avalanche Sill plates inside all four doors. Whew!! The account needs a rest!! >:D :B:
