How Many Miles To First Oil Change Indication?

Please forgive my ignorance...but how do you change the oil filter and not the oil. ?If you just removed the oil filter wouldn't the oil come rushing out and loose some oil and then end up having to put some more in it?
Nope, doesn't come out. Just what you spill from the filter. :6: I haven't changed my own in a few years so I don't know easy or difficult it is on the Av to change the filter. ?But, just change the filter and add a quart. Back when I started driving that was the norm. ?Filter @3k miles, and both @ 6k miles. My Dad had a Friend who drove his car over 100k miles and never changed the oil. Just changed the filter and added a quart each time. But that I wouldn't recommend.
Actually, I'm not recommendiong anything. To each his own. (y)

Since the oil in the oil pan is at a lower level than the oil filter, you can remove the filter and only remove the oil hat is in the filter. I worked for Mobil Oil Company for 30 years.

While under warranty, I plan to change my oil (Mobil 1 Syn 5W-30)and filter when the "DIC" tells me. After warranty expires, I plan to use Mobil 1, change only the filter and and a quart when the DIC instructs.

The oil doesn't wear out, so just keep it clean with filter changes. At $5 a quart, you are just wasting money on more frequent changes.

I am currently trying the filter & quart method and will be doing an analysis on the oil at 12,000 miles on the oil. I am changing the filter and adding a quart at 6,000 miles and doing a full oil change at 12,000 miles. I've got about 10,000 miles on this method so I'll have results soon.

My dic finally told me to change oil - 9100 miles, but what's important is the hours - only 173. I work in maintenance for a construction company. We've changed the oil in equipment for years at 250 hours on most gear and 500 hours on Isuzu 4 stroke diesel engines.

The oil that came out of my AV at 9100 miles looked, felt and smelled just like it should have. I had a 2000 Silverado that said to change the oil around 4500 miles each time. I think you'll see the miles to change ratchet up in the future as the truth about engine oil longevity gets around.

So true! Talk about using fear to create product usage. Both oil and filter last much longer than 3K, 4.5K, or even 7K miles.

What I've always heard is that the oil becomes contaminated over time. Things such as unburned fuel, water and microscopic dirt, carbon, etc. build up in the oil. Some engines don't seem to burn any oil but what's really happening is the contaminants are entering the oil at the same rate it is being consumed--off of the cylinder walls. I think this was from the "expert" mechanic in Popular Mechanics. Any thoughts?

To me $30 in oil every few thousand miles seems to be pretty cheap insurance compared to the thought of an early engine meltdown.

But, I'm a software guy so I'm always suspicious of the hardware!!!
