OK, i am sure this has been covered already, but had a hard time fiding anyting via teh search button.

I have a '03 AV. No system, no dvd, stock radio, no bose.

I was thinking about adding a DVD system to the AV for my 2 kids. I was thinking along the lines of the monitors in the front seat headrests for them. Is this hard to do? Would I have to buy new headrests or is there a way to cut them or what??

I would prefer not to go the overhead console approach unless i have to..

Any suggestions?

Check out this if you don't want to cut your headrest.

http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-KnXREhMbrGn/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=3&g=39200&I=026T5612MR&o=m&a=1&cc=01&avf=Y

They also have some models that are already installed into headrest but the want like $600 a piece. OUCH! Crutchfield isn't the cheapest place but they can give you some ideas of which route you want to take.

SPEEKAFREAK, that is a nice solution, but sorry to say those are pure crap!! (no offense intended and sorry if you have these, our rep brought them buy to show us and they didn't even work when he hooked them up!!) The Vizualogic (vizualogic.com) are definitely not cheap, but are by far the best option on the market right now for headrest video monitors. They offer 7" screens preinstalled into exact match headrests in the same finish as your vehicle, and are relatively easy to install.

The overhead console would allow you to use a larger screen (10.4" is common), and typically cost less than the 2 headrests dependiing upon models of course.

A small dvd can be installed in the console below the radio, or it can be installed on the floor under the rear seats. I am guessing that you don't have xm radio, therefore you have no aux input capability on your radio and you will need to fm modulate the dvd sound through the oem radio in addition to the headphones that will come with your wywtem of choice. Hope this has given you a little help :D

No, I don't have these. Nor have I seen them in person. I was just making a suggestion. You are right the Vizualogic stuff looks really good but they are very proud of there stuff. If you know what I mean. I would go with the flip down because you get more for your money. Those headrest screens are just to small for me. They tend to be hard on your eyes. Later.

Well have an 02 here and i am not sure about your center console but i have a Pyle dvd player in the center console no cutting at all! Just like God meant it to be there! An I have a 10.4 drop down Tv. An d yes get the TV tuner built in and get more then one AV input. ( Kids love playstation!) PUt something liek that in and I can assure you that you will never here " Are we ther yet again?" :E:

Kodiak; do you need to modulate or can you just use the wireless headsets. Personally I don't want to hear what they are playing or watching. ???

Speek, hope you didn't take offense to my response to your suggestion as my intention was not to knock your suggestion but, rather, to speak from experience with certain products :) It's all good!!

Joe, almost any system you decide to go with will have both options--headphones and some way to listen through the audio system.

KodiakZ, no offense taken at all. It is good to know those things are crap. I just seen them on the site messing around and thought it might be an option. Later. (y)

I have looked at this topic for some time. Hopefully someone can answer this for me. I want to put the two Vizualogic monitors in the headrest and a DVD player either in the center console or under the backseat. Since I have the Bose system with XM does that mean I can plug the Audio out of the DVD into the Aux of the radio and the rear seat entertainment headphone plugs can be used by switching the input? Is this just a pair of RCA's? Also, does anyone have any pics of DVD's installed in the center console of an 03? It looks like it would fit in the single Din down below the climate controls.

Thanks a lot, Steve

Same question here!!! Have the Bose 6 disc HU has that little AUX button on it. Will the DVD player work threw this?? Is it plug and play??

Does anyone know where the Bose amp is in this truck? I would like to get the model number off the amp. I work for Bose (electronic tech) and would like to look up the schematics for this amp. That way I can see if there might be a way to hack into the aux input. Hell I will use my truck as the guinea pig. I can get a new amp if I screw mine up.

Hey, this is Cool to have a Bose tech on the board. Hopefully you can figure out all kinds of neat things to do with our Bose systems.

I like my music loud, but I am not the kind to drop several grand on a system. If I can tweak the factory radio I will be happy.

Heck, it sounds good to me as is. Granted, I have some gray in my hair and am not looking to deafin the people around me at the stop lights!!

To answer the questions above regarding RCA inputs for the Aux channel on the radios. I think that you have to purchase an adapter to allow this. (JP Customs, one of our site sponsors, sells them) The CD Changer takes up the Aux channel. The adapter allows the aux channel to be shared. The adapter goes in-line between the CD-Changer and the HU.

In a recent post from Shape Shifter he gave me a link to the adapter.

Hope this helps some of you guys,

My amp is under the console but you have to pull the whole console to get to it. Then you have to take the amp out and flip it over to get the model number. I think that will be a weekend job. I can tell which line it is made on. I may cruise down there and talk to the other techs and see if they know which amp goes in it.

Our system has the built in 6-disk changer, how are you suppose to put it in-line between the two? I'm not doubting you, just curious. Isnt this what we have.

Not compatible with vehicles equipped with the 6-disc in-dash slave unit.

This opens up more questions like can I still play a CD while using the AUX for the DVD output?

Damn, everything has to be so difficult when using stock head units. Every stock unit should also include RCA pre-amp outputs to make aftermarker installation of amps easier. I can dream right?

The bad part about all this is Bose doesn't make the headunit. Bose only makes the amps. I think Delco makes the headunit. I can only find out about the amp inputs and outputs via our schematics. I'm not an Engineer so I can only access so much info. Of course this will give me something to do on the night shift.

Actually Delphi makes the head units now. If you have xm, you can get an adaptor (Peripheral or soundgate) that will allow you to listen to input an external source or 2 directly into the head unit and without any modulation. Now, you will only be able to control the volume through the radio and all other controls will be from the source unit you are using. You will not get any display as to real time data from your external source, although I would bet that thye will eventually find a way to da this on the databus. You might be able to listen to a dvd through the rear headphones while listening to another source up front, but we have never verified this.

Reidan, that is nice thinking, however, you will need to intercept the commands or data before the amp. I believe the data only flows to the amp and not back. I don't think the actual audio is on the databus, but it probably will be soon.

You are correct. The audio isn't on the data bus. The only thing on the databus is amp turn on,off, volume and a few other things. At least that all the class 2 line operates on the amp. The keep alive circuit always talks to the headunit to let it know that it is on. I looked all the schematics for this amp and there is really no way to do anything to the amp to get an aux input. It will have to be done to the headunit. Which I have no way of getting schematics for that.

Dayum.. and we were all excited there for a moment. Pumping in this aux input will be solved eventually, even if not by this group then by another and it will eventually get posted on here.

Funny how you learn by hindsight.... I didn't want the XM radio... won't work here... but would have ordered it if I'd known the extra input could have been used for other things.

Okay, I know this has been asked before, but I've never found an answer. For a 2002 AV with standard radio/head unit, where do I get power for my DVD player and headrest monitors? Ideally, I want it on the same circuit as the radio so it will stay on for a while after I turn the car off. Do I tap into the fuse box somewhere and, if so, where? Do I tap into the power going to the radio and, if so, which is the power wire for the radio and how is the best way to tap into it? Any info and tips would be appreciated.

Albert,

In another thread this pic was posted by MikesTNF, it is a pic of the fuse box showing wich fuse is connected to the RAP... he did apologise for the fuzzy picture;

According to mike, the red wire you can see coming into the 10amp fuse in the bottom RH corner of the fuse block is the one which is connected to the RAP.

Of course I have an '03 so I have no idea if this is correct or not.
