intermediate shaft & high miles

Just an FYI regarding replacement of the intermediate steering shaft under warranty on high mile trucks . . .

I held off doing the latest replacement because I was annoyed that I would have to pay the bill on something that was a GM screw up. I assumed that with 92k miles and no extended warranty I was on my own.

Finally had it done because I was lending the truck to my parents for a few months and wanted it to steer straight. To my amazement GM warranteed the job since I had had the I.S.S. greased while the truck was under warranty. Said they would keep fixing the issue as long as I own the truck.

Took my 03 in for service and they told me I needed a new intermediate shaft.
They said that GM came out with a new design and that should stop the clunk.
Anybody heard about this? What is the average cost of this repair?  I bought this AV used 2 years ago, so I don't know if it was replaced already. I have an 04 2500 PU with the same noise but that is still under warranty. I will surely try to resolve that.

They put one of those newly designed ones in mine.  It's much better but it ain't perfect.

WOW, where is this dealer at  (y)

My "new" one needs to be replaced again. Granted, it was done about two years ago. I believe the part is $150 +/- and labor should be no more than one hour. I'm thinking about having it done during my next trip to the dealer for service.

Does this cause the truck to not steer straight or is it just a clunk.  I have a 2002 with 114,000 miles that pulls to the left.  It does this with new tires and a alignment.

Just a clunk. I have the same model and year as you. I had a slight pull that was corrected with an alignment. Granted, I only have 62k miles though. I'd suspect a tie rod in your case.

I just saw in this months Street Trucks Mag.
There is a Co. that is making a HD shaft out of Stainless.
I dont know price or manfacture (will look up tonight)

I got the Mag due to Them Modding a White 04 Clad AV.

There were 2 problems in the front end of my truck.

One was a clunk, espec. with the wheel turned sharp.

The other was a looseness or rattle in the steering system.

One problem was the intermediate shaft and the other was the crossmember.

The clunk has not reappeared.

The rattle/looseness in the steering was what recently resulted in the "new and improved" part but it did not 100% completely fix the issue (significant improvement, nonetheless).

Found it FlamingRiver Smooth Steering shaft; Pricy but looks Sweet!

I agree with hound. I got my truck back and drove it for the first time in about six weeks. The clunk is still gone, and the steering is tighter than it was before the new shaft, but it really isn't what it should be, in my opinion.

Maybe I just drive my Jetta too much, and have gotten used to that tight feel. But the Av even with the new shaft doesn't  seem as good as the truck was at its best.

Beginning to wish VW built a truck. Damn, did I just say that . . . . . .
