I've got a Z-71.

I'm thinking of buying a floor jack and jack stands to simplify tire rotation, lube jobs, and anything else I need to do underneath. I'm looking at a jack with a 21" lift. Is that enough clearance to get the tires off?

That ought to be fine as long as you aren't running huge tires.

Am I missing something? I decided to go through the motions of lowering the spare tire, checking its air pressure and testing out the Jack and related tools. I discovered that the jack, (located behind a plastic panel under the right rear seat) was held in place by two 10mm nuts. Where is the tool to remove these nuts? I couldn't budge them by hand. To solve the problem, I took a spare "nut driver" and 10mm socket from my tool chest and added them to the tool set located in the right rear side storage. Any other ideas?

As I have been told on more than one occasion, and many others before and since, in board postings all over the Internet: RTFM

No offense intended :D

All you have to do is crank the jack down a few turns and it lifts out. When you get the jack out, notice the position of the wheel stops before you take them off, it will make reinstalling them easier. The jack and tools that come with the AV are better than most factory setup, and the gloves are a nice touch IMO.

I am reminded of a magazine called "Highlites" which I received as a young boy - you can pick one up in any pediatric office waiting room. That magazine used to have a section entitled "Goofus and Gallant" where two boys encountered the same situation; Goofus handling it the wrong, tactless or "rough trade" way and Gallant handling the same situation wtih grace, tact, and kindness.

Seems we have a wonderful example of Goofus and Gallant posting in response to TommyD's post right here . . . . .

Johnny D has the answer...also check out the little paper thingy on the jack handle baggie...it helps...

I looked in my owners manual for "RTFM" but could not find it. Could you please explain. :2:

I never heard RTFM before but I guess it means "read the forking manual"!

Thanks for your positive (and not so positive) answers. A) I read the manual, and it does not address the fact that the jack is held down with two 10mm nuts, (so releasing pressure on the jack WILL NOT facilitate its removal). And the instruction sheet on the jack tools does not address the situation either. Guys, the jack is secured to the floor of the vehicle with two 10mm nuts. There is no wrench or socket provided to remove them. I have placed a 10mm socket and nut driver in the tool kit, which works perfectly. My real question was why didn't GM put a tool in the kit that would remove these nuts. Thanks for your courtesy.

Trust us you do not need a 10MM socket to remove the track. I guarentee it.

Send us pictures of what you are doing and we can help. And releasing the pressure on the jack is what removes it.

Just my 2c

TommyD~ ya need a voucher? maybe you can go to the possible GTG saturday. It sounds like yours is a rarity.
I've never heard of anybody requiring tools to remove the jack.

Curious- what is your born on date?

TommyD,

It works just the way Johnny_D said. You remove the plastic cover, crank the yellow knob counterclockwise until the head of the jack clears the bracket. Then you lift the jack up. Then you unhook the bottom of the jack from the backside of the bracket. The 10mm nuts hold down the bracket, not the jack.

Unless, of course, someone has added another bracket after the fact.

PICS are required here!

OK I got. Thanks to all for your help. The 2 10mm nuts I referred to were the Jack "Bracket" mounting nuts. Releasing pressure on the jack did allow the jack to be removed from the bracket. DUH !! Thanks again, great Forum.

well, he sure did put up a fight ("you guys are wrong, my jack is held down by bolts"), but in the end, another satisfied customer >:D (y)

Its ok! Im sure all of us at one time or another have done something the hard way, just to find out later that we didn't have to spend hours doing a 10 min job. ;) (not that removing the jack takes hours or minutes) ;D
Glad you got it figured out.

Install on REV. Indiglo

13 1/2 hrs.

Everything that could go wrong did.
The most entertaining was: Taking an hour to figure out why was the Indiglo not coming on. ?When it had worked 10 min.s earlier when I hooked into the 12V adaptor.

Failing to realize the bolt I grounded it to had plastic all around it!

FSUGUY- What?? the factory visor decals have clear plastic covering that has to be removed? I never noticed it when I placed my aftermarket Av mountain decals over the existing ones.
