Lug nut torque setting

My manual (2004 Z 71) states a 140 ft/lb torque setting for the lug nuts.   That is one heck of a lot of force to put against anything. Am I mis reading something?

I only run 70ft/lbs in my Spec Racer Ford  and about the same in my Datsun 2L Trans -Am car.   Wail on a torque wrench to 140 to see what I mean.

No..140 Ft Lbs is correct  :D Avalanche is not a toy like the others you mentioned

p.s welcome to the club  :D

Thank you    I still can't believe alloy wheels can stand uo to this but I will make a few turns in the am.

BTW, GT-1 cars don't use that high a setting.

Tip - since there are 6, tighten the first until it snaps.  Tighten each of the other 5 a smidgen less :)

The wheels may be aluminum but everything that's threaded is steel.

Doug:

I don't know anything about torquing (if that is a word), so I will ask - why do you suggest a little less for lugs 2 through 6?  And do you set the wrench for say 135 versus 140?

Definitely a joke...

I drive faster than most dump trucks so I torque mine to 450 to 500 ft/lbs?

Simple.  You don't want to snap off all 6 :)

??? I've never torqued a lug nut in 48 years of vehicle ownership. And only had one come off, but that's 'cause it got overlooked in the re-tighten sequence. :beating:

:welcome: to the club TVBX.

I do mine to 120Lbs. I thought that was a lot. But if it says to go to 140 then whom am I to argue the point.

I know when I was autocross racing my Z cars and Honda's I would go somewhere between 80 and 100. The problem with to much torque is if you get a flat while racing it is a little harder to get the tire off.

I never used to torque lugnuts either.? Until a study was done in a trade magazine for auto mechanics which my father told me about.

Properly "torquing" the lugnuts (yes... all 6!) will actually help reduce the chance of brake rotor warping.? Which will extend the life of your braking system (rotors and pads)

And of course, ensuring that the lugnuts don't "fall off"? ?(a rare occurence, but I do see it here in ATL from time to time)

For anyone who has an impact gun at home, I use http://www.torqstik.com/

Actual manufacturer http://www.procutinternational.com/shop_accessories5.aspx

You can use the extension 140ft-lb bar and add your own socket for about $20, or if you are lucky enough to know someone who isn't using their set, you can get a 10 piece socketed set for $50..? >:D? (good luck!)? ?If you don't know someone who doesn't use them the cost for a set of 10 (including the one you need for the AV) is approx $220.? It should cover just about anything you will ever need!

Ebay has some, just search for torque stick

Good luck!

Thanks all

I will torque the RF at 140, the LF at 80, and the rears using a computer generated random selection.

I will set up some cones and report back. I think the slalom time should be faster in reverse with this set up.

Seriously, I appreciate all your input and agree that the "snap one off first" program is practiced by all the mechanics in my area.
