Max size tire for Stock Rim & Height

I have a 2002 AV and need to update my rubber. I was looking at a 285/75 r16 or a 265/75 r16. The spec on the Bridgestone 285 says it needs at least a 7.5" rim. According to my door, I have 16" x 7" wheels.

One dealer said they wouldn't put on the 285 because it might screw up the geometry of the truck, besides the speedo.

I was planning on putting on the 265/75 r16 to get the taller tire and not go any wider.

Anybody have any experience with this and give me a tall tire size that will fit on the rim.

FYI - The stock tires are 265/70 r16.

Thanks

i would also like to know what the max tire size for my AV is.

i have an 02 Z71, i believe my rims are 17x7.5 but i'm not sure.

Hey Check out the BFG MTs or ATs they come in sizes you are looking for and will fit on the stock rims...

Also they are a lot better then the Bridges!

Ive spent a lot of years wheeling big time stuff and without going real agressive the BFGs are the best.

Good luck!

If you get a HPP III you can adjust your computer for the change in tire size. If you're going from a 265 to a 285 it does not impact your geometry.

The stock tired O.D. is about 31.6". You can go to 32" O.D. without problems - however EACH TIRE IS DIFFERENT. That is to say you could have 10 different brands of 265/70R17 tires side by side and mount them up on the Av and you'll find O.D.'s from 31.4 "to 32" depending on how they are made and how they sit on the Avy...

I have a 32" O.D. with 265/70R17 tires from Les Schwab...

I seem to remember folks putting on 285/70/17 BFG All-Terrains on the stock 17" rims with no issues (except recalibrating speedo).

Don't know about the 16" stockers that orig poster asked about.

Thanks for the advice so far but I still couldn't find the answer I needed in these responses.

I know going to a wider tire wont affect the geometry of the truck. But I am trying to go from a 70 to a 75, which provides a taller tire without going wider.

I'd hope to find someone out there with 16" wheels and putting on a taller, and maybe wider, tire. So I can determine how tall I can go.

What I have is 30.7" diameter. The 265/75 is 31.8". The 285/75 is 33".

Any additional thoughts from anyone?

Balldigger,

You can go to the Bfgoodrich web site and pull up the all-terrain T/A KO tire. It will tell you the rim width needed per size tire etc.

I just put on a set of BF Goodrich AT size 265/75/16. They work fine. I had my local Chevy dealer Recalubrate the computer. This tire is .10" tailer then the stock 17" tire that comes on the Z71s. Fills up the wheelwell nicely and rides great.

You can find a online tire calculator HERE.

According to this calculator the stock measurements on a Z66 (265/70/17) is 31.60" If you go to a 285/75/16 the size is 32.83. I think you may be better with a 275/75/16 the dia of that would be 32.24 and it should fit fine because it is just a little smaller than the 285/70/17's that others are using if they have the 17' wheels. The tire dealer should be able to tell you the diameter of the tire he is selling you. You can not go much larger than stock without some rubbing. There is a small issue of some tires rubbing the plastic inner fender in a spot and some have trimed the plastic.
