its official, I have had my Av for a year... just got the letter in the mail to renew my registration.... which is fine and dandy... but man I miss living in Alberta.... my 50 bucks a year for registration there is now over $500 here in Arizona.... :8: :E:

(I offered the dealer an "out the door" price when I bought it, so don't know how much it was the first year)

So much for my mod money this month.....

What's the breakdown on that 500 in Az? That can't be just plate renewal. Are they including some sort of property tax or something?

In Va, it's only between 30 and 40 a year depending on vehicle weight and whether or not you have vanity tags. And then we have personal property tax every year (not sure what a full year will run on the Av), county stickers (24), annual safety inspection (I think it's 15, but I have friend who does my cars for free), and then emissions inspection every 2 years.

In Oklahoma the first year was around $1200 but remember that includes taxes, plate, title etc. I have not had mine a full year yet but after the first year it should be around $100 bucks or so.

Thankfully my 2 year was only about $400.00 this year. It was almost $1200.00 in Ca but Arnie came in a got rid of the proposed tripling of the registration fees. Between that and $2.20+ per gallon (87) gas here I would have been really hurting... :-[

SC property tax is about $400/yr. Plate registration costs about $20 for two years. I don't feel so bad about the property tax since the sales tax caps out at $300 - makes it easier to purchase a truck that way!

I renewed MI tags/registration for the 3rd time in March, $150.00 and $44.00 for my '94 S-10 LS [$44 must be minimum charge for truck tags now]

the breakdown is:
Vehicle License Tax: 499.48
Registration: 8.25
emissions exempt: 12.50
air quality: 1.50
postage and handling: 0.37

so you see that is just for the truck, no property tax in here....

I'd better clarify. The $400 is the personal property tax on the truck. I pay about 4x that for the property tax on the house, which is still about a third of what we paid in MA! That's one reason we moved.... ;)

You know, Florida may not be a "rich" state, the job market ain't the best, public education pretty much sucks...BUT the sun is warm, gas is cheap(ish), there's a constant building boom, and it only costs about $75 a year for registration (and I have a specialty plate...plain one is probably about $50).

I was waiting for some of you guys to say you were kidding with some of the taxes that you have posted here. What, are your roads paved in gold or something? ??? :cautious:

Rich...

$75 in Orlando... I'm getting pooched by Lee County, it's $99.10 in Fort Myers. My Excursion was only $66 since it was an SUV. Also, since the Av is a Truck, my registration expires in Dec instead of on my b'day (more stuff to pay at Christmastime... great). I have a specialty plate too, but it's a cheap one... lemme guess... ur's has a Seminole on it ?? Just kidding :)

Registration in California is 2% of the value of your automobile. (ex: 40K = 800/year).

Dollar amount goes down yearly as the auto depreciates.............

I feel your pain Grey... I'm up for my 2nd year of registration in July... that's gonna leave a mark

Well, for all you math weenies out there, here's the AZ registration breakdown:

There is a $4.00 title fee; an $8.00 registration fee; plus an air quality research fee of $1.50; and a vehicle license tax (VLT) assessed in place of a personal property tax charged by other states.

The VLT is based on an assessed value of 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price reduced by 16.25% for each year since the vehicle was first registered in Arizona (15% before 8/1/9:cool:. Then, the rate is calculated as $2.80 (new vehicles)/$2.89 (used vehicles) for each $100 of the assessed value. For example, for a new vehicle that costs $25,000, the first year assessed value would be $15,000 and the VLT would be $420.00. The second year the assessed value would be $12,562.50 and the VLT would be $363.06.

I can understand the reasoning behind it: (supposedly if you can afford an expensive vehicle, then you can afford to pay higher registration), but it still is a shock each year.

Back in MI, it was only $75/vehicle... regardless of the cost. I loved that.... but that's not the case here in AZ.

Wow it cost $55.00 for two year plates on my truck, and the personalized plates only cost me an original extra $10.00. Since the truck is leased there is no property tax on it. But just drive our roads and you will find out why it is so cheap :7:. Gas isnt as bad as many yet it just jumped to $1.75/gal.

gas is $1.99 at the station by my house, but it is around $2.20 up in Scotsdale where I am working right now.....

MI = Michigan and it was weight based here until 80s gas crunch when they switched to some value based formulae. Minimum on a pickup truck is $44 now, that's what I paid on '94 S-10 ext cab that is still like new with 43,000 miles on it.

Holy Taxation Without Representation Batman!

I guess I'll stay in NJ. I think I pay less than a $100 a year to register the Beast. Who'd a thunk that NJ would be cheaper for something??

But they get you on the insurance, when I left Jersey my insurance was cut in half but then I had to pay property tax on the vehicle so it is a wash. They are going to get it out of you one way or another. :8:

Mine's about $60(Truck). Trucks will eventually drop to a min. which I think is around $50 to $55. Cars don't. Our specialized plates really tick me off. They run $20 to $30, not bad. $40 for Personalized, a little high. BUT, If you want a special plate personalized you have to pay the full shot for both. So it would be $60 to $70. And that's EVERY year. :8:

I know I have bought a number of vehicles in my time... most of the time I have purchased vehicles in California. Usually when I purchase a vehicle there it ends up costing me about 8% in sales tax and then 2% of the agreed upon price for the vehicle for registration. So for a 35,000 truck... sales tax would be about 2800 and then registration would be about 700... But, now that I have been in the Army since about 1996 I have claimed Alaska as my state of residence. Now there is no sales tax and for registration it cost me about 140 for two years if I remember correctly. Just my .02
