I just talked to the folks at R&D Truck & Auto Accesories about a Headlight Controller for the 8.1L trucks. ?For those that do not know, the current Headlight Controller they offer IS NOT compatible with the 8.1L or Diesel engines.

The Headlight Controller converts your truck to leave the low beam headlights on when you switch to high beam.

They have a prototype Headlight Controller ready for testing for the 8.1L or Diesel. ?All they need is a test vehicle!

Now here's the best part: ?It would be a FREE modification and installation for whoever does it! ;D ?

If fact, they would be willing to install an additional modification they offer FREE of charge just for letting them try their prototype on your vehicle! ;D

You don't have to be next door to the company either. ?They will travel to you (within reason). ?If you are a rather long commute to the company, you might could set up a rendevous point.

The company is located in St. Cloud, Minnesota. ?All you need to do is call them or e-mail them, stating that you would like to participate in the testing of the Headlight Controller for the 8.1L of Diesel engines.

Someone please do this! ?I want a Headlight Controller! >:D

Darn I am in but Maryland might be too far to travel. ?And I am sure they will get plenty of local takers for this offer. :6: If you hear that they don't I will volunteer my 8.1 for the test.

It is a real shock to discover this 9 months after successful install and operation - I have the 1259 Headlight Controller and the 1271 Fog Light controller installed and operational. Both went in with minimal effort.

I have the 1253 Automatic Headlight Override, but am not pleased with the install - may be some problems there in locating the precise setup on the HVAC controller. In any event I am looking at an alternative that promises to be substantally simpler.

Good luck on getting a free prototype for something that already works >:D

gandolphxx, you are saying that 1259 worked for you? ???

Now that throws me a curve...I wonder why R&D says it won't work with the 8.1L?

Beats me - I even went out and threw a shop rag over the sensors to verify - low beams on, flick hi beams = 4 lights, I also have the fog option package and it works with low beams.

I don't see the difference between the 5.3 & 8.1 here - I think they just hadn't tried it. I am sure I have seen folks on the regular truck boards with it.

As to the control of the auto headlights, I have the kit, but don't have a place for the switch, so I am trying a different route - hope to post results shortly.

Hey, guys, sorry I'm so late with this response, but wiring up headlights so both lows and highs stay on when you flip to high beams was covered under another thread. It's as simple as tapping a separate piece of wire into the yellow wire that goes into each of the low beams and running it to any ground. Nothing to it, works fine, doesn't affect anything I've ever noticed.
