Any tips or tricks that will keep me from taking a bath when removing the oil filter? Last go around I had more on me and the ground than in the pan :-[

I spin the oil filter loose until the oil starts to run and let it run out for a min or two intot he pan then take it off. Seems to work better than punching a hole in the bottom. (at least for me :) )

Cut a 2 litre bottle about a 1/3 of the way down from the top. Hold under the Oil Filter, Unscrew it. Let it fall into the Bottle.

VOILA< No Mess!!

This is a cool tip I have to try it. (y)

I punch a hole in the bottom AFTER loosening the filter a bit.Let it drain for 10 minutes. Then I use a bottom cut off a 20 oz plastic Coke bottle(cut just a hair longer than the filter). It is small enough to squeeze and use as a "handle" to turn the now loose filter off and also catch the remaining oil.If you don't punch a hole, there will be too much oil for this method.

JW you 'da Man thanks bud some karma coming your way ;)

On the 02 AV that I had it was no problem changing the filter without making a mess because it's right out in the open so you can get at it.
Now on my 03 it's above the front driveshaft, I place some tinfoil around the driveshaft to form a channel for the oil to run down to the drain pan.

My dealer has had a "internet coupon" for a lube oil and filter for $17.95 every since I bought my Avalanche. I have yet to get any oil on me by using it! I just print one out and head to the dealer.

there are some good methods mentioned here. i personally would try not to punch a hole in the filter. there are a few ways to get the job done without resulting to this.
the reason i do not like this is because of the potential for damage to something/ yourself. and for those of you who have those extra tight filters (even though we know they should not be this tight in the first place.) you just let all the oil out when you punched a hole through it. now you have to get it off. you can't drive the vehicle to the dealer/ garage for them to loosen it now.
i would rather deal with the spilling oil myself. but, if you use the empty bottle method, or the let it spill for a minute, or two, method you should be just fine.
that's not to say i have never punch a hole in an oil filter. i ahve done this before. however, it was a last resort kinda thing. the oil filter was so tight the oil filter wrench rounded out the filter. the plier type wrench just smashed the filter. this one was way too tight.
