I know what you mean. I went to Goodyear to have the oil changed and they did not have my filter. They called several suppliers and they did not have any. They had to drive down to the local chevy dealer and buy one. 30 minute oil change took 2 1/2 hours. After a few comments to the shop manager I walked out of their with the oil change and the filter for FREE. Manager said next time they will have it in stock or Its FREE again.

Just changed my oil this weekend on my Z66; while not the 8.1, I just wanted to point out to everyone that this is a smaller filter than what was on my 99 Tahoe, thus the filter wrench I have is too big, and I think Hercules screwed the damn thing on. :8: Figured this out after I had drained all the oil. Thank goodness I hadn't blocked my wife's car in! Took her car to Walmart at 11 PM on Friday night to get the proper wrench.
Yes, I change my oil later in the evening on weekends because it is cooler in South Louisiana at night than during the day; my wife doesn't gripe about what I'm doing; and my 3 1/2 year old is out cold and out of the way.

When I was in Long Beach on the Pacific Northwest Av Cruise in April I found a NAPA dealer that sold Wix/Dana Filters

I bought two for my wife's T-bird and the only one they had for my Av. Guy promised he'd have more. I love Wix/Dana Filters but they are so hard to find if you live in an urban setting...

I live in Maryland and the only auto parts store that I can find with oil filters is a small auto parts store that has WIX/Dana filters. The parts manager informed me that these filters are supposed to be a step up from the factory oil filter. I've used them twice already.

I go to strauss auto parts in NJ. I buy the Purolator PureOne PL25288 for my 5.3L. They always have 2 or 3 in stock.

The orginal filter was a pain in the ass to remove, but now with this filter, I make it hand tight and make sure there is a little oil on the gasket of the filter. When it comes time to remove, I use a little strenght and it turns so I can remove.

Has anyone here had any luck lately with trying to find a Mobil1, K&N or a Amsoil oil filter for the 8.1L Avalanche? I'd hate to put an AC Delco on it when there might be something better.

Here is a link to the Wix website:

Wix Filters

Wix/Dana started out making filters for industrial equipment (tractors, big diesels, etc.) and then their technology spilled over into cars. Everyone has an opinion - I really like the Wix/Dana product. They have recently updated their website and now have a zip code locator to find retailers in your area - discovered there are TEN nearby me!

The LF509, is actually a filter made by Hastings. It seems to be the highest quality filter produced thus far for the Avalanche with the 8.1 L. I've checked with Mobil1(Champion), K&N and Amsoil.
Even though the Hastings may not filter as well as the others mentioned above, it is superior to the AC Delco.

From my experiences (I have cut open over 1,000 filters), WIX/Dana are the best (IMHO). For alot of different reasons. One being my personal race experiences with them and they hold up great. They are constructed differently than most and have better and more filtering media. They have steel end caps (less distortion), instead of cardboard and have a real spring for the anti-drainback valve instead of a cantlever setup (Fram). I am checking with my rep in the area and we will try to have a part#'s for everyone in the next few days.

Hey Guys I too have opened lots old oil filters and found the filters used at quick lubes like Quakerstate, penzoil, etc junk filters only take out big chunks opened a fram and found ends of paper not attached. (very bad) Napa gold made by wix the best I have found. more paper media and ends of paper glued and banded with steel. For the 5.3 part #1045 Napa Gold

Interesting read fellas...I changed my oil for the first time this weekend on my new 2500. The owners manual (not service) says both filters are AC Delco PF59's, but it wasn't. I had to ask my neighbor to drive me to the Auto Parts store. I also (after break in) run Mobil-1 Full Synthetic. My engine seemd noticeably more quiet on the first day...noticeable difference. I actually thought the thing had cut off on me (it hadn't). ;D Just a thought for those with noise immediately upon startup.

Hello,
Just in case anyone out there is wondering. I called Mobil 1 the other day. They stated that they still do not make a filter for the GM 8.1L engine.
Amsoil Tech support also states that they have no plans to make their own Amsoil branded filter. For now, they are selling the Hastings LF509.

i'll have to disagree with you on that one Tiger. i noticed that the knocking/rattling noise on start-up was noticeable, or more noticeable, after i switched to the synthetic. it is supposed to allow less friction right. makes everything run with less resistance. well, i think this is part of the reason i get more noise. then when everything is warm there is less noise. heat causes these parts to expand. just my .02. :B:
