I have a 2003 Z66 withOUT OnStar, but there is what appears to be a little speaker above the driver's head. Does anyone know if, even if I don't have OnStar, is this speaker still there? I haven't tried prying the cover off yet. I'm an amateur radio operator so that would be a _great_ way to get the audio into the cab! If the speaker is there, any idea where the wiring is? I don't have a wiring diagram for the truck and I'd love to tie into the existing speaker if I could without tearing up the headliner.

Thanks!

If your Av has Onstar service in is played through the radio.
I read somewhere that what you are seeing above your head has to do whith the climate control system.
Booth of my Av's have the auto climate feature in the heating & air system and this grille is in booth.

Chevy tells me that that grill above your head is for the stereo systems road noise compensation.

The HU turn up the volume when it detects increasing road noise at the "grill" above the driver's head

alan1234,

Based on what I have read here I think Chevy is blowing smoke at you. ????

The thing in the headliner above the driver is part of the automatic climate control.

I am sure someone here will confirm this.

The SCV is speed compensated volume, and is exactly that. The volume is adjusted based on vehicle speed, not road noise.

It is for the automatic climate control. Mine died two months ago and was making a clunking sound. If you put your hand to it, you will occasionally feel a very minor suction. General Motors calls it a Climate Control Thermistor and Air Aspirator. In essence, it sucks air in, checks the temperature, and adjusts your climate control accordingly.

Hope this helps. :)

Boar-Ral is 100% right. I work at the Silverado/Sierra factory and I see 200 of them a day. There is a small squirrel cage type fan inside to draw in ambient air. :D

I get a buzzing sound comming out of mine. I thought it was the microphone for onstar. The buzzing goes away when I turn the key off.

I guess I need to schedule a trip to get it fixed.

The Onstar Microphone is located on the left side of you overhead console. You may have to shift the visor to see it. The buzzing you hear is from a bad fan. Hope that helps. :D

I thought I read somewhere that it was the speaker for On Star. I know when OnStar is connected, it mutes the stereo speakers. If it was for climate control, wouldn't there have to be one on the passenger side for the dual climate control?
