i am trying to figure out how to paint the bowtie on the grill of my '03 av. what kind of paint should i use? and how do i pop the emblem out of the grill?

Hi hcoguy1634,
:welcome: to the site!

It looks like from your avatar photo you have a WBH AV so the bowtie is bolted in from the back of the grille. For an AV with side cladding it just snaps in and out.
The best way to reach the back of the bowtie on a WBH is to open the hood and pop some of the pins holding the fan shroud between the radiator and grille. then you can reach with a wrench and take off the two nuts holding the bowtie on. The nuts are self tapping and they go on plastic studs on the back of the bowtie.
As far as paint you can use automotive touch-up paint once you lightly sand the plastic surface of the bowtie. For mine I sanded the bowtie, than put two coats of black automotive paint then applied a decal and then applied two coats of clear and lightly sanded between coats.  The more clear you apply the deeper the color will look and it will even out the layers if you have a decal or design on it too.

Here's a pic of my black bowtie. I just washed it with dish soap let dry and then cleaned some more with rubbing alcohol. Put on about 10 thin coats of Rust-Oleum paint for plastic about 10 minutes appart. I did not put a clearcoat and it's holding up well after 3 months. If it gets mucked up I'll just sand it a bit and repeat the process since it was so easy to do.

looks good!

Be sure if you use different colors of paint, to buy high quality.  I tried doing, orange, black and white for mine.  I bought cheap black and white and automotive orange.  Because of this, the auto paint store had to sell me clear without hardener because of the cheap paint.  Everytime a bug hit it, the bug would eat through the clear.  I was able to put clear with hardener over the other clear, but they did not react well together and caused the one clear to shrink causing a zebra stripe impression on my bowtie.
