Part 2 - Complete Audio Install

So today's plan was to run the new speaker wire from the rear amp location to the front doors and run the power from the amp to thru the firewall and wire it to the battery. Sound simple but it was 95+ degrees today and I was hungover :3:. Here is the 2nd part of my audio install diary:

-Here are a couple of shots of the speaker wire along the driver side. The AV provides great locations to run wire:

-Couple of shots where I am mounting the amp:

-This is where I am running the RCA cables for the preamp and the remote turn on wire:

-Close-up of OEM tweeter passenger side:

-The parts that need to be removed to take off door panel:

-This is a shot of where I ran the power for the amp thru the firewall. This one killed me...

-This is where I mounted the fuse holder for amp power:

-This was tricky. Where do I get ground? Decided to use my dremel to get rid of the paint and drilled a hole thru the truck. Hard to tell from the picture but it's on the passenger rear right near the door:

-This is what it looks like now that I have run all wires!
Final Location of Wires

Well I hope this is useful for someone. I didn't realize how much time was involved in getting the pictures ready and typing these little diaries! :D

Please feel free to ask any questions!

In a few weeks this posting may be hard to find. Maybe there should be a separate section for posts like this so we can find them easier when we need to. These pics are great.

It's called not posting it in the first place and putting it in CAFCNA as a magazine story..

Sorry, just frustated by a lack of content for CAFCNA and then see a great post that would make a great CAFCNA story and would be archived forever and easy to find...

Great job C.

Let me ask something though, as I just began the same chore myself. As I removed the factory Stereo, I noticed that all the lines in the Plugs on both connectors were white! Curious, I removed all the Tape to expose the wires in the loom, and voila, there are the colored wires, connected via crimp on connectors, has to be factory, though I have only owned it for 2 weeks. I baught it with 30miles on it right off the showeroom floor! upon further inspection, some of the wires are actually stripped and Frayed, and one (a brown and White one) only has one strand of copper left holding it together! I'm ranting now, but this disgusts me! I have a mind to put everything back together breaking that connection, recreating the loom and heading back to the dealership for repair. But why lose my truck for extended periods of time for them to do exactly what I'm going to do anyway. BTW it looks like the factory wires were burned somehow! scorch marks on the lines etc.....

If this is what Chevy considers Quality control, they are sorely mistaken. Makes me wonder how many other Duct taped items I'll find! (figuratively speaking).

Actually,
A trip back to the dealership,, proved most enlightenning. Seems that the vehicle had been vandeled prior to ever coming off of the train cars! Before it ever reached the Dealership, there had been an attempt to steal it. when they couldn't steal the whole truck (Broke out the Ignition switch though) then they just decided to steal the factory Stereo, (Obviously on drugs) and tear up the dash in the process. The dealership, on the surface, did a stellar job repairing it. But then again everyone has a skelotin or two in their closets. This skelotin was how well they repaired the actual electrical.
Skelotin #2 was that I as a new car purchaser, was not informed of this rather dark skelotin #1.
Since I was replacing the NEW factory stereo anyway, all I wanted was the original repair information for my records, and a documented (pictures) history placed on file for future warrantee issues. They gladly gave me this, and indicated that there would not be any issues, even with aftermarket electronics, as it was so botched prior to making it on the sales floor in the first place.
So I'm off. Problem now is, there are alot of Browns, Blacks, Greens and Light Greens to contend with. I'm not sure what goes where. so I'll try to get on of the adapters in the morning, and spec from that. If the multiple colors are speaker lines, I'll employ fader logic. Anybody see any problems with this method?

Unfortunately, a wiring diagram won't be of much help, as there are multiple same color lines? what's that all about!

This is a real pain in the arse! :8:

I do of course have the option of making GM replace the entire factory harness, I'll see how well I do it my way first.

If anyone does have the proper pinouts for both connectors on the factory stereo, it wouldn't hurt to pass it along. Thanks in advance.

never good to hear news like that, but you did great covering your arse. hope all turns out well! :)

There was a post here not too long ago with the pinouts for the speakers. You might want to search for them. I was planning on keeping the OEM speakers with my new HU and amp but after inspecting them really closely, I decided to order some Kicker K65's. Supposed to get them tomorrow. ;D

And the saga continues.... The dealership is all to anxious to replace the factory harness. But to me thats just not enough. I want an extended warrantee to cover any potential issues that arise down the road. If I don't get that, I'm looking at a lawsuit, in the end, with a new vehicle. They don't want that, so I think the Extended Warrantee will win out. I just am goig to personaly inspect the work after completion.

On a different note, I have some information that could be very valuable. I have the schematics and pinouts for the Factory Stereo and Amplifier! with all pins, and color codes Identified from source to destination, Including low level outputs to the factory Amplifier! this could prove very helpful to those trying to mod the head unit with more powerful amps! I currently have this information in fax form, but will swing by tonight to pick up the original documents, then I'll digitize them and place them in a PDF file for distribution. So.... any of you guys feel like really playing, but not making it look like that. Just ask.

I'll let you all know what they decide to do, but for now, they are going to replace the factory harness for me for sure. I think I'll keep the original to play with...RCA jacks anyone?
