Well I finally got a day off. I took the AV on its first official trip in Germany and visited a nearby castle in Landstuhl. The drive was not too bad. There were a couple of streets that gave me problems. I had to take sidewalk to get around some parked cars. I didn?t take any pictures of that because there were a line of cars waiting for me to move.

Use the Picturetrail link to see more pictures. I plan to take more pictures of the AV on my next trip out. (I won?t have the kids)

Nice looking Pictures.... Would be interested for more pics as you continue to move around and thorugh Germany.

I think the locals will stare an awful lot at all the room you pack with the AV while driving around. Nice picture, stay safe and keep the rest of us up-to-date on your European vacation. ha

Glad you're finally out in your AV. ?(y) ?What ever became of the shipping "damage" ?

It's going to coast about $900 to get it fixed here. I'm going in the morning to file a claim. I?m not to sure which avenue to file through. :cautious:

1) Shipping Company:
If I file through the company who shipped my AV, it could take months. They said it would be hard to prove that the damage was done during shipment because they do not write down the interior of vehicles on the inspection sheet. The only thing they wrote down was the condition of the TV (working) itself, so I should be able to prove that much. Its only common sense that the guy who took the inventory would have marked the visor as being broken when I showed him the TV to begin with.

2) USAF Claims office:
I can file a claim with the US government and only get the replacement coast minus depreciation (14% a year) because it only cost me $500 to have it installed in the states.

3) My insurance company:
I risk having my rates go up and it lets off the shipping company. However, I get replacement in kind.

or...
4) I think I can use a combination of the three.

I?ll know better after I talk to our legal folks tomorrow.

SO are you the only AV in Germany?

I think there are 3 or 4 (all white ones) here. I?ve seen two with my own eyes and my friend told me about another one. I printed some AV brochures and will try and tag them tomorrow.

Looks like I?m going to have to start a chapter for Europe. >:D

Hey Loggie, great to see an AV in GE. I had two assignments in Heidelberg and one in Friedberg. I loved it over there ;D. Bet the AV won't fit in most underground parking garages :(There is a small town just north west of Mannheim called Laudenberg. Go there for Xmas. It's not a big tourist hang out and it is the best small town in GE. Enjoy your tour. Wish I was there again. Take care.

Loggie, glad to see you took everyone's advice and had it shipped. Sorry to hear of it's misfortune in transit however. I would love to have mine over there. I was at RAF Alconbury (England) for a few months back in 91 and it was a blast driving over there - yes, on the wrong side of the road. What made matters even more interesting is we were driving a 4-speed diesel Sherpas and yes, the stick was still in the center so you shifted with your left-hand. You could barely get that thing up to 50-55 on the M1!

What a blast.........

Jamie

Loggie,

The AV looks great in Germany, but then again it looks great everwhere! Please keep the pictures coming.
Thanks,

I bet you are getting lots of looks. ?Aren't you?

Everywhere I go folks are turning their heads. I just don?t know if it?s because it?s a cool truck or if its the sound of a V-8 with dual exhaust that scares the crap out of them >:D >:D

Loggie, I am sure its a bit of both. (y) The AV is some thing quite new over there, and just seeing one is probably making them wonder what it is, but the dual FMs are probably also making a crap load of noise which will make just about anyone turn and stare. >:D
I hope you have a great time in Germany, I know that I would, and good luck in getting the damage repaired.

Hey everyone!

I went to Mainz, fantastic German city, Tuesday and took some great pics of the AV.

My Uncle owns a photography shop on the side of the Cathedral or Dome as it?s referred to. The pictures show the speed I was driving on the autobahn to get there, some pictures as I entered into the town, the archway entrance I had to take to park the truck, and some pictures as I drove out of town..

Just to let you know, in order to get to the parking lot near my uncle?s shop, I had to drive through the pedestrian zone to get there?

Check out the pictures at the following link: http://www.picturetrail.com/schenksters

Look in the album called Dome in Mainz.

Is that why beemers are so small? :)

LOGGIE, Really enjoyed the pictures, two observations, one, white buildings don't show up on white AV when hit, and two, looks like you need the folding mirrors for driving around town. I am really impressed with the picture in the Cardnials parking spot. I can see why everyone stares, you make three of them. enjoy the journey and return to us safe. :-*

Love those pics of Mainz!!!

Keep em coming and try not to take too many parking spots >:D

LOL... the Europeans invented the "compact" car and you just will need to keep taking more room than they give you. LOL Enjoy!

Thanks for the great photo's, please keep them coming!

Just wanted to let everyone know, I?m still traveling through Europe with my AV. >:D Today I hit it Av style! ;D This weekend I?m going to France. Next week it?s off to Holland. I?ll take plenty of pictures?.

BTW?there are now 4 AVs here in Germany. I?m trying to organize a Bar-B-Q or something. (y)

I love seeing American trucks in Europe, especially the Avalanche! Woo hoo!

In November 2002 I saw a white Av parked at the Geneva Airport... I did a double take just to make sure, and there it was, towering above all the other cars.

Question... does Germany make a special-sized license plate for American cars (besides that long one)? I've always been curious... also have fantasized plenty about driving the streets of Europe in a big truck ;D
