Greetings! I finally decided to go with the Magnaflow 14589...1 in/1-out muffler for my 1500 Z71. I couldn't be happier. I had a set of Flowmasters on my '69 Chevelle 427 and it growled like crazy. (Which is what I wanted on that hot rod ?;) This time around I needed something that:
A. Was not going to generate annoying cabin resonance at cruising speeds...

B. Utilized the perfectly competent stainless stock pipes...

C. Sounded more aggressive (low rumble...not that whiny motorcycle-esque sound!)

D. Improved HP without sacrificing torque (some systems that flow too much increase HP at higher RPMs at the expense of low-end torque)

E. Looks GOOD!

F. Didn't break the bank. :(

The "single in/single out" Magnaflow 14589 fulfilled all of the above! ;D
Click on the link below to see some install pics...as well as a few Chevelle pics showing the Flowmasters. Enjoy (y)!

Nice! Did you do the work yourself or have a muffler shop do it?

How much should I expect this to set me back, muffler + installation?

I had a muffler shop do the work...Exhaust Pros in Richfield, MN. Tom is the owner and does great work! Bottom Line:
-Magnaflow 14589: $174.95
-Magnaflow 35115 SS tip: $69.95
-Labor: $25.00 (he spent almost an hour...great rate!)
-Shop supplies: 19.59 (fabricated connection pipes, etc)

Total: $306.68..."Out the door Elanore!" ;)

Careful how you use that "old man" comment...I'm right there with you at 46 in 5 days!!! ;)

As far as I'm concerned...it is kinda exciting for us "old" guys! (y)

Bowtie,

I am curious as to how the magnaflow sounds. I was just on their web site, and they do not have samples like the flowmaster site does. Can you describe the sound in and out of the Av. Also, was there a noticable difference in power. There site tested a 96 suburban and showed amost a 20 hp gain.

I had the Magnaflow installed with only 42 miles on my truck. I've had 4 Magnaflow's on my late model Chevy trucks now and simply love them. The sound is awesome when you step on it with no cabin resonance.

As far as performance goes, my "butt-dyno" notices a difference. You will feel the difference immediately. >:D

Hi TJ! The best way I can describe the sound is:

Outside: Low and rumbley (is rumbley a word ???)
It is a subtle sound...not like the all metal baffled Flowmasters. The sound is deep and mellow and yet powerful sounding. It comes to life a bit more on acceleration.

Interior: Almost like stock...especially at cruising speeds (THIS IS WHAT I WANTED) However, you get a little, mellow rumble under moderate acceleration. It's the best of both worlds for me (performance minded ;D) and my family (they want transportation  )I hope this helps!

Thanks, Bowtie, you sold me!! I printed off your install pictures and part numbers and am going in tomorrow to set something up with my muffler shop. This sounds and looks just like what I was looking for, and can hardly wait to hear it for myself. ;D ;D

OK, I'll admit it. I'm a numbers guy. A 'butt-dyno' is good, but not very accurate and subject to tricks of the mind.

My question is: Are there any HP and Torque numbers out there for our 5.3L and 8.1L (and 6L for you EXT owners) stock engines with the magnaflow muffler? If there's even a 5 HP difference, the $300 you paid is certainly worth the price! ;D

Sorry my butt doesn't cut it for you ;D There are numbers out there I am sure but I did not need dyno sheets to "sell" me on paying $229 out the door for the exhaust. The OEM exhaust is restrictive and most any aftermarket exhaust will help our trucks. MHO of course. :)

The closest thing as far as performance data that I can come up with is the info provided on the Magnaflow website from a 1996 Suburban with a 454.

Magnaflow Data

Ok, Bowtie, you have also convinced me as well. I'm going to need that test drive first >:D. Then it's on to Tom for the same install job. I just have to see if I have enough in my piggy bank

Jamie

Great Jamie...I think you'll be very happy with this set-up ?;D ! Here's another option to think about if the Piggy Bank is starving.
:0: Instead of the all stainless Magnaflow #14589, you could go with it's aluminized brother #12589 with the same sound and performance benefits for about $50 less. (I went with the stainless because Tom, who hauls his race car on a trailer, claims that the stainless runs a little cooler underneath. Plus... IT LOOKS SOOOOOO GREAT!!!) Then...hold off for a while on the polished stainless tip. Christmas isn't that far off you know ;) ;) ?Going this route should save you about $120, putting you "out-the door" for about $186!
Good luck buddy!

I am planning on getting a magnaflow tip and eventually a magnaflow system like yours, bowtie. However I have heard some good stuff on the flowmaster as well, so I was wondering if anyone knows how well the magnaflow stacks up to the flowmaster, because if it is a quality product and has good sound that can compare to the flow master than I will go with the magnaflow. However I think that when it comes time to buy, the deciding factor will be how much I really want to spend.

The Flowmaster and the Magnaflow are both GREAT products. The Magnaflow design is "straight through". In fact, before Tom put the muffler on, I looked straight through it to the other side. With the off-set model like we need for the AV, the internal pipe just angles slightly to make it over to the offset opposing opening. I really don't think you could go wrong with either product. I loved my Flowmasters on my '69 Chevelle SS 427, but I wanted a totally different sound for my AV. I just added some pics of the Chevelle at the same address I listed when I started this thread. Click on the link in my signature box to get you there. I am pleased with the Magnaflow...it's just what I was looking for ;D,

You are correct! No warranty issues with the muffler replacement. Just remember that any replacement parts won't be covered by GM. Thankfully Magnaflow comes with a lifetime warranty! ;D

I'm with you Zimms! The Flowmaster 40's howl! >:D
I love that powerful gutsy sound...my wife and daughters on the other hand...well...you get the picture ;) I also wanted to avoid the cabin resonance at cruising speeds. I had a TON of it with the 40's on my Chevelle!

Call me a copycat!! ;D I went in today and basically duplicated Bowtie's exhaust set up. The only thing I changed was the tip (actually the Flowmaster #35113 tip is the correct fit: 12" length and 3" i.d., fits right on the existing pipe) and also I went with the aluminized steel version #12589. The way I see it, both come with a lifetime warranty, I'll spend the money elsewhere. Out the door price, installed, including tax, was $200.32.
I used an independent muffler shop that does allmost all the performance and specialty work in town, very highly recommended. They are both a flowmaster and Magnaflow factory recommended installer, and had all my parts in stock. when I quizzed them about who had the best set-up, the owner stated that you can't really go wrong with either product, but Magnaflow has a lifetime warranty vs. 1 year on Flowmaster. I think he actually sells more Flowmaster units.
Sound is definitely quieter than a Flowmaster 40 or 50 series would be. No noticable diff. at idle, beefy noises when you get on it, but not as loud as I expected. I am very happy with the sounds and look forward to many miles of happy motoring with this truck.

Congratulations Snow! (y)
I posted the option of the aluminized version #12589 earlier in this thread. I wish that the Magnaflow tip was a direct match...My exhaust guy cut it down primarily because he couldn't get the correct exit angle as the tip started out at 22''. I think that if he used the whole tip as designed, he would have had to insert the tapered end into the stock pipe. I'm sure that my particular tip was designed primarily for a "straight out the back" dual set-up. I'd be interested in seeing a pic of your Flowmaster 12" tip. I hope you enjoy the extra grunt and appreciate the quiet in the cabin! ;D
