I was installing a bed-light switch this past weekend and was wondering if there was a tool to easily remove the plastic push-in fasteners holding the bed lining in place. They are round with three small square 'holes' that would appear to fit a specialized tool. I was able to pry them out with a screwdriver but that always leaves a mark. Anybody know if a tool exists and where to get it?

There probably is a tool, and it might be available through GM. However, I'll bet it's not cheap.

It's fun to get a new tool, and I know I'm guilty of getting tools that I don't really need, but I question the economics of this tool. Unless you are planning on using it a lot, and taking off those panels on a routine basis, I'll bet it's cheaper to simply replace any damaged fasteners. Even if they're a dollar a pop, like the cladding fasteners, I'll bet you can replace them all a couple of times over for what it might cost to get that tool.

Yeah, I've seen stereo shops with a tool that will remove the plastic fasteners without damaging them. I'm sorry but I don't know the name of the tool.

Well, return it if you must... but if you do, that will just prove that you are not really a tool junkie.

Die-hard tool junkies, like myself, will scoff at my earlier statements, and go out and buy the tool anyway. The fact that they may only use it once is no deterrent. >:D

My earlier comments are merely a way to weed out the tool junkie wanna-bees from the truly incurable die-hards. If based on them, you want to return a tool, them I am afraid you have failed, grasshopper.

AT the factory we just use an awl and punch them through. Of course, replacements are at hand by the thousands. ;D

The liner push pin is designed to be removed with a screw driver blade. Carefully pry up on the center pin alternating between the three holes. Make sure the screw driver blade fills the slot. This particular pin is tight so take your time. Once the pin is pulled out about 1/4" the larger base can be pulled out. I am not familiar with the aftermarket bed light switch parts but you won't find much behind the liner to look at.

Tools, I love tools!
check http://www.snapon.com
in the search box put in the following part numbers (one at a time)

ASG185
ASG186
ASG187

search by part number.

They are called Trim Pad removal tools. They are for pulling the door panels off, but work well for pulling out the plastic fasteners on the bed.
