Question for those with 22's and 305 wide tires

How bad did the steering wandering/looseness get versus stock tires/wheels?

I had a set of 22's with 305/40/22 on my AV for about 100 miles and it was almost scary how bad the front end got.

I know that larger tires follow the grooves in the road more, but even my Jeep with 33 x 10.5" isn't this bad.

I took them off and put on some stock 17's from a Z71 Suburban for the winter... and while the 17's were on I had the intermediate steering shaft replaced.

Do you think that will make a difference when I put the 22's back on for summer?

It's almost like the wheels are turning independently from each other... kind of like bad tie rod ends.

Any suggestions or cures for this problem?  How much bad steering is "normal" and should be expected?  Maybe the end link mod would help?

What have others encountered?

mine actually followed the grooves in the road less when I put on my 22's.  I think I would check the tires or the front end components to be safe.

IMO if your rims and tires are done right you shouldnt have ANY "bad steering".  It sounds like your wheels are not balanced properly or maybe a bent rim.  Are you using spacers on the 22" rims and tires?  I have had custom over sized rims and tires on every vehicle I have ever owned and NEVER had the issues youre talkin about.

Mine definitely likes to follow bumps and grooves a lot, but it's never "scary" ...  think you might have another possible issue.

i have 305/40/22 and i would say mine follows the bumps and grooves as well.  i noticed that is follows them more at slower speed.  but i did put on a front end leveling kit so i know my suspension is tight right now, but i am installin new shocks tomorrow.

I agree definitely more noticable at slower speeds and while braking.

i have a rubbing with my 22" wheels and tires driverside on sharp turns? and passengers side is only in reverse with the wheel cut all the way? :E:i know that i read about other members having this problem so time ago  and they cut something out of wheel well

Mine does track grooves a little and does feel a few more bumps but there is nothing scary about it.  I wouldnt hesitate to make the same choice again if I had it to all over again.

I have 305/45/22 and they follow the grooves in the road and rub a little.  It's because of the wide tire, more contact patch with the road,  my Camaro does the same thing.  If you think something is wrong then have it looked at, someone you trust so they don't BS you.

Right.. exactly the same feelings i had.. They def follow some of the grooves like at stop lights where trucks where big dips into the road but it's never scary. Not much more than it did with stock either. I actually love speeding with the bigger rims on the highway etc, because it's just so much damn smoothier. I was doing about 70-85mph coming from DC to Norfolk,VA and by the time i stopped the tires where still cool like i just drove up the street.
But back on topic I never have anything near that feeling unless coming to a slow stop,m and it's damn sure not scary, i just wouldnt eat a sandwich and drink a coffee while doing it.
